Can someone please help me with settings and process to activate anew Airtel pre-paid Sim so it can be used in a USB Data Card for internet.Do I need to send some activation SMS before trying the SIM in modem ?I've tried a few combos but it doesn't work.Sim is already activated and Voice calls/sms are working.but i still can't connect to internet when using this SIM Card in USB modem.if such a thread exists, please help me get details.

Seems nobody had answer to my question, however today I was at one friend's mobile shop and luckily found a guy who had answer to my question.

One needs to activate GPRS before he could use it, typically on a new SIM card, so I dialed *567*11# and got a confirmation SMS.

once this was done, configured USB dialer to use apn as "airtelgprs.com" and dialed *99#, it was connected and browsing was better than vodefone mobile connect.

Someone also told me one can Recharge for Rs.98 and use gprs for one month upto 2GB data transfer. will try this in a day or two and post back speed results.

Dial *567*1# from your Airtel mobile for all GPRS info including various packs.Dial 12118 for Airtel GPRS helpline(50p per call)APN airtelgprs.com is all that is needed to access internet via datacard.Internet via Airtel on the Edge Network is quite good.

Thanks buddy, wish you could have been a day or two early, was too eager to know this.
anyway I used vodafone for approx 10 months, and now using AIRTEL on same usb stick, I must says, Airtel Edge is better than vodafone.
Voda sim is already in my pocket now and will be sent for connection closure in next 24 hours, why pay Rs.550/mo. when you get double speed on Rs.98 from airtel.

on Airtel my file download speed is always above 20kbps and sometimes even 34-40kbps while in voda it never easily stayed above 10kbps
this even when both voda and airtel towers are under 100m from my house and can see them from window.

I have observed one thing which is that when we subscribe to some Airtel internet pack eg daily, weekly or monthly pack we get increased speed. However, the speed is much slower if we try to use internet (mobile office) without any pack .

This may be a coincidence but I have observed this atleast twice with Rs 5 daily pack.Yesterday the speedtest.net from Bombay server gave an average speed of about 210 kpbs.

Any one else observing this increased speed only for internet packs ?

I am not sure how this could be possible, for my experience as I used internet for few minutes without any pack and was getting approx 190-200kbps actual speed, which is attached on my first post above.

Now i am on Rs.98 pack and below is the speed test i took while i wrote this post

signal strength at this moment is 99%

I see.So you mean mean to say that in your case the speed "decreased" after you subscribed to Rs 98 plan but was better before ?

I am still wondering is it possible for Airtel to do this seperately for various plans ?

More experiences are welcome.

not exactly, I think speed varies a lot, i did another test from home now, signal strength 95-98% and got this in 3rd attempt.
first 2 attempts gave 0.09 and 0.10

EDIT:
just download a small editing software (editplus) and got amazing speeds.
