I never back up my contacts while I load a custom rom or hard reset my phone. I just sync my phone with my google account so that all the latest changes are effected. If you do want to backup contacts, go to contacts, click on menu, impprt/export contacts and export to sd card. As far as Sms are concerned, I use go Sms pro, and back them up and restore. As far as applications are concerned, I used titanium backup (root) for backing them up. I would always hard reset after an update. Official gb is not available for moto defy as of now. Of course you can load cm7 etc. After rooting butthat will violate the warranty terms. Sent from my HERO200 using Tapatalk

Are you backing up the file to your phone, or to your computer? I had no trouble backing up on the phone, but you have to use a browser to back up to your computer.

To back up on the phone, I know it saves it on your sd card. But saving it to your pc is a bit different. Or are you having trouble backing up at all?
