You can use gparted or select "Something else" during Linux OS setup.
Step 1:
Create root partition. This is where Linux OS installs.
Size: 25 to 50 GB or size of your choice.
Mount Point: /
File System: ext4
Create as: Primary Partition.
Step 2:
Create swap area. Used if you hibernate PC or in case RAM is full.
Size: 2 to 5 GB.
File System: linux-swap/swap area.
Create as: Primary Partition.
Step 3:
Create home partition. This is where your documents, pictures, downloads, configurations, etc. goes.
Size: Assign all remaining unallocated space or size of your choice if creating extended partition.
Mount Point: /home
File System: ext4
Create as: Primary Partition.
Make sure you backup data to external drive first if you have any.
You can experiment in VirtualBox or VMWare before actual install.
