Your concerns are valid...
And I had similar doubts 8-10years ago.... then I switched to Water purifier instead of a RO.... because it filters out almost all the essential minerals dissolved in water...
Overall as water supplied in Delhi by DJB is not hard.... so in IMO.. RO is waste of lot of water..... and then later adding on minerals to make up... did not make any sense to me...
Water purifier has to 2 filters to remove physical impurities and 2 carbon and one UV tube.. no motors.... so no wear and tear and failures and less maintenance....
But then that is my opinion..... you are better judge of what kind water supply you get and your taste and hygiene preferences....
Yes it is totally a sorry state in terms of govt. regulation/ standards... we are on our own to judge... while all these companies create confusion and mislead....
