yes, manz, the best way to check for overall speed is to download multiple (3+) torrents with high number of seeders, like linux distro ISOs etc. just downloading over HTTP/FTP via some sites can be disappointing especially since some limit their upload (your download) by IP address... some sites limit it to 256kbps per connection, which is why some "download accelerators" give better results by making 4 or more connections to get 1+ mbps :)just check your speed via multiple simultaneous torrent downloads, thats what i do.and airtel is right, microsoft does provide some seriously good bandwidth/downloads via various providers...
 
256k per connection is so old school for the west (and east,duh!)..
The very reason you get good speed from Microsoft is simple,CDN..
The traffic is internal to airtel network..
Ill give you an example, HD Web
It needs nearly 8Mbps speeds (**be warned its HD video,itll wear your data limit**).Its provided by CDN,so im sure itll work for ya..

Gathering from what you say,Airtel has not done their homework right..
