Every single Android user running a device on Android 8 or below should install this app.
Android 9 has internal support for encrypted dns so this app is not required.

Intra - Apps on Google Play

Intra protects you from DNS manipulation, a type of cyber attack used to block access to news sites, social media platforms, and messaging apps. Intra also helps protect you against phishing and malware. It’s easy for anyone to use -- just download the app and get started in just a few seconds. You can leave it on and forget about it.

Features
• Free access to websites and apps blocked by DNS manipulation
• No limits on data usage and it won’t slow down your internet connection
• Open source
• Keep your information private - Intra doesn’t track the apps you use or websites you visit
• Customize your DNS server provider — use your own or pick from popular providers

This is what they suggest about Android 9.

Q: What’s the difference between Intra and Android 9’s Private DNS support?
A: Starting in Android 9.0, there is built-in support for connecting to a Private DNS server using the DNS-over-TLS protocol. Intra is an app that supports Android 4.0 and later, and lets you connect to a server using the new DNS-over-HTTPS protocol. If you have Android 9.0 or later, we recommend enabling the Private DNS setting instead of installing Intra. If you have an earlier version of Android, or if Private DNS isn’t working well for you, we recommend trying Intra.

so installed this app and used it for a while. it pretty much runs like a VPN so you cannot use a vpn while this app is turned on. adds two icons in the notification bar so i am guessing, it might take some effort to keep it running on your parent's phones.

Gotta love technology. Intra showed me what kind of domains are being connected to by the phone while I am doing literally nothing.
