Yes, exactly the same seneriao with me. Initially, I got the regular sim card cut because the micro-SIM card wasn't available. However, when I did get the micro-SIM card I noticed it is white in color without any logo. Hmm, I think I activated the iPhone services whilst on the cut sim card, cannot recall. Then moved on the the micro-SIM. Interesting, could that be the problem, I guess I'll find out soon enough. iPhone services not yet activated, awaiting the message from them. Sincerely appreciate and value the depth of thought you have GarfieldDC.

Update!

Ok, I hate to admit it it but it seems to have worked.

I Removed the "www" profile. Restarted the phone.

Changes I noticed~

The balance on my 499 plan i.e. 500MB balance is reducing, the core balance is not reducing, yet!

Will watch and wait and post if there are any further developments.
However, still getting only 3 bars of service, Personal Hotspot is a go...

Thank you to GarfieldDC and Rit for helping me out!
Cheers!

Update to iOS 5 and you have the personal hotspot feature in-built !Works with 3G/2G tethering both with sim card cut to micro sim and not originally micro !

iPhone services are now active on my SIM. Tethering is working. Since iPhone services are activated my 3G data works with both the APNs - www & iphone. At least I dint have to bother with a configuration profile anymore.

Hi GarfieldDC,

I guess you have been through the same dilemma as am currently in.

I am using an unlocked iPhone 4S on Vodafone Network with 3G; but unable to use tethering through hotspot.

My device is appearing in the network's list but no internet connection.

I had set configuration profiles earlier for Edge/ GPRS but uninstalled them on getting iPhone services activated.

Now, I do not have any configuration profiles set on my device. Can you please assist me in resolving the issue?

@GarfieldDC
The problem I was facing seems to be resolved. I have been monitoring my balance for the past few days.

I have 2 new querys, though it is not related to this thread, felt I would post it here, mod's pl. shift the post if you feel the need.

1) I have few or no bars of reception/coverage at times. Especially when I am connected to a wifi network. I was searching high and low for a solution...
Today I completed my profile for my account "My Vodafone", after doing so I could see I had two PUK codes, PUK1 & PUK2.
After googling, I concluded that the PUK2 code is for the current micro-SIM and PUK1 must have been the sim that I cut and used initially on my iPhone.
I googled some more and found this page iOS: Understanding the SIM PIN, which frankly is related to sim locking and unlocking. My sim is not locked. However, I was hoping to find out if the PUK code could help resolve network issues on my iPhone.

Is there any way I could enter my PUK code on the iPhone without having to unlock it every time I restart my iPhone or unlock my iPhone(I read somewhere that is what I would be required to do).

I have not tried entering the PUK code yet i.e in Settings>Phone>SIM PIN as in the screenshot below.

2) I get a flash popup message from Vodafone at the end of every call (Call summary and balance). On clicking the green "Dismiss" button, I get a blank black space (no buttons or options), I have to lock my iPhone and then unlock it to get back into the iPhone. Maybe their flash script that provides the popup is not well written. Looking to disable the summary message I get at the end of a call, permanently.

Hoping for some help wrt #1 & #2.
Thank you.

Q1. Are you using an official microSiM or a regular SIM cut down to size? This does make a difference as far as iPhone services are concerned. I have faced no issues after getting an official microSIM.

Q2. When you connect a device to your iPhone's hotspot are you also entering the wifi password to connect?

Q3. What device are you trying to connect to the hotspot?

Qr. Have you tried backing up & restoring your device?

Don't mess with the PUK code. Its purpose is to help you unlock your SIM in the event that you accidentally lock it. It is better left alone until you face that situation.

I think you can turn off the flash messages through the flash option under Settings> Phone> SIM Applications. You are getting the flash messages as you are using a prepaid SIM. But I have never faced the issue you have described with my BSNL prepaid SIM. I tap on dismiss and the flash message goes away and i use my phone.

Hey,

I did find this post (How to stop Vodafone Flash SMS on iPhone - Reverse Peephole) which helped me turn off annoying flash marketing, a while ago. However, I still get the call summary popup, the flash message after clicking the dismiss button does not send the control back to the iPhone. In any case I would like to just turn off the call summary flash popup, hoping this is possible. Minor nuisance I know, but i have to keep locking the phone to get back control and I read somewhere the flash messages drain your battery.

Thank you.

@kiknyjakeI'm not sure if you can get rid of the call/data summary flash messages (I could be wrong). I have primarily been a post paid user so it has never been an issue for me. As for battery drain, the call/data summary messages won't cause any noticeable drain as they popup only when you make a call or use data. If you had their other flash messages turned on which are basically advertising and popup at all times then that will definitely drain your battery.
