This is for an aged uncle who is sorting out his affairs so that his wife doesn't face issues in case of well. Porting adds unnecessary complications.

Would check at local store which method works best. He is planning to get a new connection for wife and keep existing sim in a backup phone for a few months. Starting with a brand new sim seems like too much work considering how much work it is to get it updated in aadhaar and banks etc.

@Sushubh Went to two of my nearest airtel stores last year and they both denied by saying "sir there's no policy". Even after showing them their own twitter care reply. Decided to just port out to Vi instead. I could have raised a complaint but it was better to get Vi. Your store guys might agree if you tell them to convert to postpaid with ownership change as they're eagerly waiting for it 😁.

yeah local company owned store guys also said prepaid name change is not possible. informed uncle. also told him to visit a local croma store to get a budget smartphone. suggested CMF.

go for vi i ported 2 airtel sims due to bad network and signal issues ported out to vi happy so far touch wood. tried telling 121 for signal issues they would not even understand the issue and kept repeating the same thing again and again ported out fed up :) .

@laksh211in Exactly, they know they don't have a lot to lose.

Also, good choice you've made. They seem to be the only operator caring for users and actually listening to issues and bringing innovation. Others are stagnant.

Yes, its possible. Done from an Airtel store, for a prepaid number (a few months ago).

Pasting parts of the reply mail from airtel :

1. Transfer of Ownership is allowed between blood relationship and legal heirs only.
2. If original owner alive - NOC from transferor & transferee
3. If original owner not alive - Request Letter ( Transferee), Death certificate, Legal Heir ship Certificate, NOC (Notarized) from other legal Heirs if there are more than one legal heir, POI & POA of Expired you & all Legal Heirs (For Kerala circle)
4. Transfer of ownership is a free of cost service
5. You have to visit nearest Airtel store along with following documents:

  • Proof of address
  • Proof of identity
  • One passport size photograph
  • NOC from both parties
