Is it worth upgrading to 4mbps or 8mbps on Airtel Broadband?

was told today that rapid 175 8mbps plan is not available in my area. i can only hope now that they do not kill my 150GB 4mbps plan.

msjanus: Thanks for the observations.chromaniac: I don't think they can do that. Subscribers should be able to stick to their existing plan. I was under 2mbps Freedom 2499 plan last year. I didn't migrate to 4mbps Turbo 150 initially because I didn't have FUP. I mean FUP was there but they didn't strictly implement it until June or July 2011. Even then, I was able to get a post-FUP (100gb) speed of 1mbps. Only after I started getting 256 kbps post-100GB, I switched to Turbo 150.

they have migrated people to newer plans several times before. a lot of people had non-fup plans but were forced to migrate to one of the newer plans.

I think that happened only for people who got their speed doubled by Airtel at some point. I mean subscribers with 512k got doubled to 1mbps and 1mbps got doubled to 2 mbps and in the bargain, they also got the FUP associated with the corresponding new plan. Not sure.

To the OP: Did you upgrade?

The reason is for getting 8MBPS, you need to be in a distance of maximum 800 metres from the local exchance / DSLAM location ... and this depends on the area ... so this could very well be the reason.. earlier the radius limit for 8 MB was 600 mts, but now the range has increased to 800 .
If a user is more than 800m away & still getting an attainable line rate more than 12mbps, then wouldn't that user still be eligible for a 8mbps connection?

That's actually the explanation (being more than 800m away from RSU) I got from Airtel. So, I won't be getting 8mbps any time soon unless there's enough demand in my area for Airtel to install addiitonal units closer to my location.I'm fine with 4mbps but the only issue I have is them scrapping the Turbo 150 plan and not adding a Turbo 175 plan. I mean I want more bandwidth and I'm even ready to migrate to Rapid 175 plan. But, you won't give me Rapid 175 for my connection. So I say, give me Turbo 175, say @ Rs. 2299 or Rs. 2399. I haven't been this exasperated with Airtel as I am now.

If I remember right, weren't you on IPTV? How the hell were they providing that then

lol. got rid of iptv long time ago. more than a year ago in fact. have not had a personal television connection since then. at that time i was on an old combo plan with 1mbps unlimited with no FUPs (at least never got fupped during that time though i did not use to track my usage). switched to 2mbps and then 4mbps plans with 150GB FUP. looks like 8mbps is not happening in the near future.

Yea, but why I asked is they cannot provide IPTV and internet on a single 4 Mbps line. So if they were giving you that earlier either they had two lines, or a single 8 Mbps connection. It can't be that the feasibility suddenly vanished.

as their management guy recently said, they consider iptv as a vas and not an independent platform. explains why they never took it seriously enough. and why it sucks today even more than it did at launch. and how they made shit load of money selling those crappy STBs at 4K at launch (i paid that much for the connection when it was launched in my area).
