After terrible low speed on reliable broadband internet, BSNL office near my village announced fiber internet. I got call from them if I wanted the fiber internet connection and I said yes.

I thought I could repurpose the old VDSL broadband modem into router for the fiber internet connection -- BUT -- they told me I need a new modem worth 3000 /-. Does fiber internet need a new modem? If so can I buy it online instead and also what kind of modem?

Yes for fiber u need onu with wifi or a basic onu without wifi if u want to use ur own router. U can buy it online too but most of service providers don't support onus purchased from outside, so u have to take ur service provider onu only. Its better u take a basic onu without wifi from bsnl if they provide it and use ur own router like TP-Link c6 for wifi and other things.

Take modem from @varkey and tell him to register . You will save 1K I guess. That guy would not be happy though 😉
Btw ask him the OLT he's using so that you can buy outside. If he's using Alphion then you are pretty much locked .You can also purchase outside also from Syrotech website. Anyways you have to buy a separate router
The ONT is worth 1200-1500 actually

AND the fibernet connection never happened.

It's weird that the line man even visited my home and took an written application with photo ID for this. Apparently the contract for the lines near my house are given to a different company so they said there would be delay for a couple weeks. Weeks turned into months and nothing happened.

I am finally leaving to a metropolitan city.
