My dad advised against getting PAN card from this age because I have to pay income tax then even though I don't have a job

Filing returns is mandatory if you have a PAN card, even if you don't earn. But you don't have to pay tax as there's no income earned by you.

Mmm. I don't think filing return is mandatory as well. It's optional if you make less than the standard deduction. Any tax expert here?

my dad has not been filing mom's it return for a few years now because there is no taxable income anymore in her name. only interest from investments that is not enough to cross the standard deduction. i wonder if this is also illegal :\
