JioFiber Bad Routing

I live in a city around Delhi NCR and have a JioFiber connection.

It always bugged me that the best i get is 20ms(ipv6) and 40ms(ipv4) unloaded pings to cdns like cloudflare which seem to be directly connected to jio through PNI and sometimes get routed to mumbai servers instead of delhi.

Got routers and cable changed but no improvement so i just accepted these number but then i hosted a probe on ripe atlas and did some measurements from probes of jio's ASN to some CDNs and it seems like i am the only one with these 20/40 ms pings and people around delhi with enjoy 5-7 ms pings.

I think traffic is just bouncing around in jio's network before getting out which is resulting in these numbers.

Local jio people dont get these and tell to buy 300mbps plan to solve unloaded latency, i am tired of explaining to them.

Anyone with some contacts to get these routing issues resolved?

You could spent whole year going back and forth with jio support and get nothing fixed (My experience from Gurgaon).

Best you can do is ensure there's no bufferbloat issues and settle with bad routing.

Got a call today saying she is from jio head office mumbai, told her about latency, asked me "what is latency i am not a technical person".

I said to just forward my concern to their network engineers who can actually do something, she did forward to someone higher up.

Lets see if it gets resolved within a week, otherwise will have to switch.

Update:
City's jio head called yesterday and said to buy 300 mbps plan to improve latency, I explained multiple times how it didnt matter, had an argument and finally I upgraded just to shut his ass up and as you already know nothing improved.

Technicians(many, my gharwale were confused ki itne log wifi thik karne aye hain) and local head visited, seemingly tensed and said "ki sir apki mail ne upar tak system hila rakha hai chandigarh mohali head office se hame phone aa rahe h".
They did their usual stuff of resetting, speed test, power was low so they made new connectors and said all works fine, I also said that I have already told you guys that everything is fine in my home the problem is within your network infra.

Their jio speed test app showed unloaded latency as 18ms, jio's speedtest server was in near city. I countered them that jio speedtest server doesnt matter and had to explain how stuff works to them and showed pings to cloudflare and google and pinpointed exact hops where latency is increasing. Also showed how traffic is being routed through mumbai than through Delhi.(BGP issue, their looking glass routes traffic to Clodflare Delhi only idk why mine is routed through Mumbai)

Surprisingly this time they were actually listening rather than their usual attitude of all works fine, highly doubt they understood a thing.

City head then called the mumbai office girl and told that home connectivity is fine, they took photos of my bufferbloat test and pings to cloudflare and mailed them to chandigarh head office.

In crux it seems like everyone calls themselves as head and I just created a big issue involving top people and looks like this time some actual network engineer is gonna take a look, but still doubt it will be fixed.

I am promised that it will be resolved within 24 hours.

What's your ping to your nearest Jio server? Is it fine according to the distance from your city?

I am still not having the best ping I could have to Mumbai server with JioFiber, but it has improved a lot after they fixed routing to my nearest Jio server.

Earlier, I was getting 17-25ms to Jio Raipur, which was same as Jio Bhopal, which is far away from my city. So, I complained about that to Jio (several higher level people, including our beloved Mota bhai) and they forwarded the complaint to my state head. They fixed the routing and my ping to Mumbai server went from averaging around 30ms-60ms to 28-40ms. Not that huge of a difference, but still much better than before. And my ping to Jio Raipur went from 17-25ms to 5-10ms. The only complaint I have with JioFiber nowadays is insanely slow browsing speed to some sites, especially the ones using Cloudflare CDN.

So, if your ping is high to your nearest Jio server, try mailing them about it and especially focus on it. Anything around 40ms to the nearest metro city is fine according to Jio, so complaining about that would not help you.

Jio's speedtest server in Karnal(krllooklaspeed1.jioconnect.com.prod.hosts.ooklaserver.net) today is 10ms(earlier 20ms) away but doenst matter, its just there to make a fool out of customers and show how they are getting low latency and high speed.

Jio Delhi from where my traffic goes outside their network is 40-45 ms IPv4 and ~20ms IPv6, but considering the distance from Delhi this is not at all great, max I would expect is 10ms for both v4 and v6 or atleast both 20ms.

When I lived in Noida local ISP had Airtel backbone and most servers were 5-10ms away(i think because of IXPs presence in Noida) and international routing was also good in general.

@x86_64 That's sad then. All you can do is mail them again and tell them your ping to Jio Delhi is poor. Or switch to a different ISP if possible.

The problem with Jio is that, all they care is that you have around 40ms ping to cities like Delhi, Mumbai, etc. So, they might not try much. In my case, they might have fixed the routes because having low ping in Speed Test apps is great to fool customers, just as you said.

I would be happy around 20ms if they fix it.

Regarding your slow speeds to Cloudflare CDN hosting it could be that websites in consideration use their free plan and Cloudflare doesnt host free plan sites in all their data centers so that may not be realted to Jio.

Taking broadband.forum as an example it is behind Cloudflare and traffic goes outside India.

If you want to test connectivity to Cloudflare nearest Data Center, test with their Anycast DNS IPs like 1.1.1.1 , 1.0.0.1 or popular sites which are premium cloudflare customers like these that will tell the actual picture.

@x86_64 It is quite random, and happens with different websites at different times. And it happens even with tracker.gg, which routes me through Mumbai server mostly. So, I think it is just Jio having issues with Cloudflare.
