IRC is nice, but some people who share put on a minimum d/l speed, watch out for that.

Invision script for IRC is nice and easy ( www.i-n-v-i-s-i-o-n.com i believe ) and it has an inbuild sharing program

You also should check out www.ircspy.com
Its a search engine for IRC , fill in what u want,press search and download. , there are more programs like this for searching IRC but, my head-capacity is limited cant remember al these links

Also.. non-irc:

Use ABC client for downloading torrents.. (Another Bitorrent Client , use google to find it...Azareus is also ok...)
Nice music program? www.slskorg.net , u can get anything there
etc etc etc

I am trying out bit torrent and it's sweet! Was able to finally download what I wanted to through last night instead of getting an eternal "Pending" status for my request. Thanks a lot for the valuable tips knak, ujjwal, sushubh, ulta vires

torrents are addictive. i download mozilla firefox using it instead of ftp.
