Low signal strength while using esim on iPhone 12

I recently went to goa with my friends. I noticed that the signal strength on my phone was very low or none at times. My friends were getting good or full signal strength at the same time. I wonder if it is due to e-sim. Both 4G and 5G signals were very poor throughout the trip. I was unable to make UPI payments, receive whatsapp/slack messages, reply to emails.
Airtel's signal strength is usually good in tier-1 and tier-2 cities but this is something strange i noticed while i was in goa.
Is e-sim the reason? Because iPhone 12 has all the bells and whistles when it comes to radio bands( all the 5G bands), so i don't think cellular reception is a problem here at hardware level.
Edit: Since i am mostly working from home, i don't notice the low signal on my phone because i am mostly connected to WiFi.
 
I don’t see how it could be related to eSIM. Were your friends also on Airtel?

Another thing is, signal level indicator ie the number of bars vary with each phone. I’ve noticed that iPhone in general shows lesser number of bars compared to other phones I’ve access to.
 
@rajat_ Network strength has nothing to do with the eSIM as there's nothing to damage like with physical SIMs that may cause problems. My IP13P had a physical and one esim and both had same level of signal bars (4) yes, they would fluctuate at times but then thats to be expected.

Are you sure that your phone's case (if there's one) isn't the culprit? What about software iOS update? BTW I am a v recent IP13Pro to S23U migrant. I'll buy an iPhone once the 15 or even 16 are released. Have over a decade worth of data on the Apple stack that I can ill afford to lose.
 
@MrGordon yes all of them were on airtel. Signal reception was a real problem, i was unable to use internet most of the time. Yes i agree iPhones show lesser number of bars.
 
@Chip yes i do use a case with my iPhone. nothing fancy, just a regular silicone case which you get on Amazon for around 500 rupees.Not a very thick case i feel, also i am on the latest software(iOS 16.5). Do you find cellular reception on S23 Ultra better than the iPhone 13 Pro?

@Rickysin are you sure? because i never face call drops or network connectivity issues when i am in Pune or Bangalore for work or travelling. It works just fine. This thing specifically happened in Goa.
 
@rajat_ I get the feeling 5G is creating issues..it needs more tranceivers that these telecom companies are lazy in putting up instead relying mainly on VoWiFi or VoNR as the case may be. So, downgrade the connectivity for each SIM to only LTE and check. If it doesn't improve have the handset checked.

For e.g. I dont get 5G on my OP11 with an Airtel sim while Jio happily works in the S23. I downgrade to LTE for stability as my residential area has tall bldgs that cause issues.
