Making or receiving a PHONE call improves SNR??

Same observation here, one call (or just a minute of dial tone, for that matter) is enough to get the link back. It continues to work with improved SNR for quite a lot (may be half an hour to several hours depending upon line condition).

Same problem with mine!
ADSL was working fine till about 3-4 days back when it started to blink continuously
happened to 'discover' this (temporary) solution

Earlier whats used to happen was, picking up the receiver would reset ADSL

Details:
Modem - D-Link GLB-502T (Inbuilt Splitter)
ISP - MTNL
Exchange Distance - (Bang across the road.... :/)

Receiver on Hook details:
US Margin - 6
DS Margin - 9
DS Attenuation - 10
US Attenuation - 9

Receiver OFF Hook details:
US Margin - 16
DS Margin - 30
DS Attenuation - 7
US Attenuation - 2

Net working fine now (past 24 hours) Lets see :|

DSL works only with phone off-hook, known as High Open Ameritech - SBC FAQ | DSLReports.com, ISP Information
 
id suggest you better complain about the unstable link to the bsnl guys, than resort to these 'solutions'. There may be some loose joints, untidy connectors etc.
