NEW DELHI: Rahul Dravid’s future at the Bangalore Royal Challengers (BRC) may look uncertain. But if the current IPL season proves to be the ex-India captain’s unexpected T20 swan song, his parting gift to team promoter Vijay Mallya and United Spirits (USL) could well be a $20-million loss.
Days after ET broke the story about the flamboyant businessman ruing his expensive and uncharacteristic silence at the February IPL auction table, sources in the BRC camp say a stung Mallya would even break the bank, if necessary, to make wholesale changes in the squad and buy glory in Season Two.
The dismal failure of the current outfit that even its promoter now admits is a ‘Test team’, surely calls for urgent reinforcements. Putting up a brave face, Mallya had told ET: “Give me one year and we will be winners.” Success won’t come cheap or easy. If, for instance, T20 strugglers such as captain Dravid, Kallis and Wasim Jaffer have to be eased out of the team, they will have to be paid their three years’ worth of contract money.
