Strange that when I searched for Windows 10X, this thread didn't come up in the results.

Microsoft had promised that Windows 10X will be able to run Win32 applications using virtualization. However, reports have emerged that there will no support for Win32 apps and the users will be forced to use Universal Windows Platform (UWP) and Progressive Web Application (PWA) applications.

From a consumer point of view, if they're using a good chip which is capable of doing things that iPads and iPhones can, I think we do have a market for them. Not sure how big, but yeah.

that's the problem here. if you have powerful enough processors that can be loaded on tablet pcs without fans... you would end up reaching in Apple ipad territory. and at low end, there are chromebooks that work fine for most people.

apple is hard to beat in the powerful tablet segment for the same reason. they can optimize their own apps and third party developers would follow soon. no one would bother for a few thousand users on windows ecosystem.

in fact, the range of chrome os devices right now is pretty broad compared to years ago. all shit old models badly priced. i guess HP etc are just dumping their leftover stock here.

Surface laptops are already in that territory and people like them. Not everyone likes Apple ecosystem.

i was talking about a device that would only run uwp apps. windows users would generally have one or two apps that are not going to run on something like windows 10x. windows 10 s has already existed for a long time. you don't see people running products powered by 10 S.

surface is a full fledged high end laptop. like the Dell xps. microsoft is not competing with macbook pro with this model. they are competing with other windows laptops. if you ask someone spending 1.5L on a laptop and ask him to pick between a surface and a macbook pro... it's likely most would go for the macbook unless of course they have very specific requirements to run windows only apps or they dislike the Apple ecosystem like someone like me.

You're not wrong. The need for FCP (Final Cut Pro) makes people buy MacBooks. If they released a Windows version, people would switch the boats without thinking a lot. With the new silicon (M1), we can move those tasks to devices like iPads. That was my whole point.

If I think about my own needs and consider getting a new MacBook, I'll be able to run all the apps that I use on Windows, I'll also be able to use FCP and the brand value of Appple is always nice.

I've been thinking about the possibility of building a Hackintosh for some time. Lol

Hopefully Snapdragons newer processors would be good enough for laptops/hybrids. Apple has managed to get a combination of battery life and performance from the M1 that Intel will find very hard to match.
