If you think its tough to remember 10 digit mobile phone numbers then get ready for this.

The Department of Telecommunications has proposed a transfer of numbers from 10 digit to 11 digit from January 2010.

India has reportedly added a record of 10.81 million wireless subscribers in the month of December 2008.

This has raised the subscriber base to 346.9 million at the end of year 2008.

The Indian mobile subscriber base grew by 48.5 per cent in 2008. The ten digit numbers are expected to exhaust from August 2009.

Get ready for 11-digit mobile numbers

this was expected.... but not so soon.anyways my cell phone has already made me memory challenged, so it doesnt matter :p

i tend to remember many of my frnds mobile number.. but considering I have some 400+ numbers in my contacts.. It would be tuff for me to remember every number..

its pretty simple. they can opt for something like...add a 9 extra to current numbers.so all current mobile numbers would be 99**** *****and they have new series like 98, 97, 96 & so on....

Not again, this now happens almost every year.First MTNL landline numbers changed from 6 to 7, then Reliance numbers were 8 digits then they changed it to 10 and then again MTNL landline numbers changed from 7 to 8 digits. And then TATA numbers starting from 56 were changed to 65.And now 11 digit mobile numbers. Why dont plan for 10 years in advance and add 2 digits instead of 1?

yeap. its terrible how the number system is not standardized in the country. especially landlines. some cities have 4-5 digit numbers. bigger cities have 6 digit numbers. government needs to have a standard for both landline and mobile numbers that can last for at least a decade.

Its just a matter of the government not ready for such exceptional growth in all places. The sarkari babus incharge of all this are least bothered anyway. Guess thats the side effect of a developing economy. Just hope they add a number to the start and not mess up anything else.

personally i have given up on remembering telephone numbers. i manage to remember my own :P i am too dependent upon my mobile phone to get access to numbers of friends and relatives. in fact, i end up getting confused with my airtel landline number when i go to pay bills.
