Movies on a DVD Player through USB: Need Subtitles

ok. i played around with the wd tv live today. i like what i saw. it connected to the wireless network just fine. was able to show youtube videos great. was able to connect facebook and see status updates. was able to play content from a portable hard disk nicely. user interface is pretty cool. typing is sort of hard because the virtual keyboard is painful to use though using the number keys work fine too. i really wished it had a proper keyboard in the remote to make it more usable. i could not find twitter in the third party services. no idea if it is available as a paid add-on or something like that. but an excellent purchase for around USD 120 from the US market.

I am little confused with this product. How does it differ with current LED TVs because they too have all these facilities .:grey:

works in case you do not have an internet enabled television. and it is easy to upgrade a set top box than your television set! i would personally avoid paying a premium for a television set that comes with internal media player.

Set top Box :question: Now I am more confused. Can you please post details of this product. because even google isn't unable to clear my queries.

WD TV Live



it is a very small box that attaches to your TV using HDMI cables. One more cable is supported. I am not sure whether it is composite or component. The box did not come with HDMI cable so you would have to get your own.

it supports external media using a USB port. in addition you can connect to the internet and your local network using wi-fi or ethernet cable.

it is pretty much a set top box!

there are probably cheaper products out there but i sort of like the WD brand so i got this for myself on a friend's recommendation. i am yet to test out the network play capability. it is supposed to be able to support streaming media content from a PC on the same network. i am not sure if my wireless network is good enough to enable streaming of HD quality video content. connecting it to the router with an ethernet cable would of course solve that. but i think i would stick to using the portable hard drive for optimal performance!

This is such an excellent thing to have. Best part is since it is a separate device, I can upgrade the firmware without having to worry about damaging a costly device if something goes wrong. Can't take such risks with the firmwares on TVs.

right. i upgraded the firmware last night. it was not connected to the UPS. it was a couple of tense minutes. if power had gone during that period, the device would have been a toast.
