MTNL Delhi MTNL Delhi updates its pre-FUP speeds to 8mbps minimum for all plans

Thanks for letting me know! What can I do about it? I don't even know how to go about explaining this to MTNL customer care. I would rather shoot myself in the foot.

I'm trying to post an image, how do I do that?

It's showing up like this:

Your data rate hasn't been increased, that means you are still limited to your old speeds and haven't got the upgrade. Complain them about it and when some internet guy comes or talks tell him your data rate hasn't been upgraded. If they say you cannot get the high speed of your plan tell them try 6mbps, if that too isn't possible / unstable ask them for 4mbps. and so on. Try to get the most you can if they aren't willing to get you the upgrade.

Do you face a lot of disconnections? The numbers you are showing looks really terrible and do not equate to what you say as 2mbps speed i.e. 220kbps download speed. Maybe its the bad router or genuinely terrible connection, can't pinpoint .

@Woke : Is there anywhere in your modem where it shows the sync rate? That Hlin scale is no good to determine the sync.

Right, so that's the thing, the people at the exchange, someone senior that is, said that this is the best speed available in my area and that they're in the "process" of upgrading. That is so hard to believe but what else do I do?

You are right that my connection is pretty terrible. The connection does disconnect often, I think it's the way they have installed the lines. There is always some disturbance in the telephone lines and when I pick up the phone I can actually hear the dial up sound of the internet trying to connect. Strange huh? I actually found a "jugaad" which is if I leave the phone off the hook the connection is more stable. It's all pretty ridiculous when I sit here and type it out, making me wonder what a joke my internet connection is. I'm not sure if the Modem / Router is also an issue. I use a Belkin N300 after the MTNL one went bust.

I'm one of those people that have a really hard time explaining to people that they need to do their job properly. I just want to deal with people that already get that. Which is why I'm eagerly waiting for Airtel to show up.

Okay. Lets get the obvious out of the way to see what your problem is.
- Is your home line concealed and very old? The main reason of disturbance is too many bad joints to the line. This also can happen in concealed wiring where other wires are pressing hard on your phone line.
- Is your phone connected in parallel or via a splitter? It should be connected via the splitter. The line coming in your house should first connect the splitter. This is how your connection should be

When you login your router page, post a screenshot of the status page which shows Operational Status, Upstream speed and downstream speed.

If they say they are upgrading, then its a good thing they might actually change the wiring & fix your problem and I would suggest you wait. Unless until you really want to switch to Airtel.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to look into this.

The connection is indeed going through a splitter. You are actually spot on about the poor condition of the wiring, and too many bad joints. However, the issue isn't with my home line but the MTNL lines coming from outside. The way they've done the wiring is really haphazard and every couple of months the phone line goes dead, after which a few calls to the linesman fixes it. I've even spoken to him about it and he said that MTNL refuses to change the wiring so he has to keep patching them up. It's so bad that when it's windy I can actually hear the disturbance in the phone increasing, which leads to more disconnections.

As far the upgrading goes, it wasn't like "we are physically upgrading these lines as we speak and they should be ready by so and so" kind of a thing. It was more like, "yeah, we're working on it, we can't say by when, so don't call us, we'll call you".

I don't have any issues with MTNL, per se, but they have not done a single thing to earn my loyalty and nor do I expect it from any PSU. I'm sure the experience varies for everyone but we have a small flat in Goa, where we have a BSNL connection, and every time I go there, the line is dead. I spend 2-3 days just to get it sorted out. Different organizations, different States, but the general attitude and quality of service is the same.

Add to that these ad injections and seriously, I don't know if you watch GOT, but if I was Arya Stark, these folks would definitely be on my list.

All I can say is MTNL is terrible at providing service but once you get a stable connection/line there is nothing like it. No hidden fees or the dotted line or T&C bullshit. All plans are on paper and nothing more or nothing less is provided by them. This is the only reason I am sticking to them until I see another ISP which gives what they promise. Most ISPs I have tried have been shady or shitty. And other the exceptionally good ones are limited to some newly developed/expensive areas.

Anyway, you can draft a letter to your exchange (hand deliver it so you get a acknowledgement stamp from them)requesting them to consider upgrading the line that comes to you, make sure you tell them why you are requesting them to do so.
I keep telling everyone this, if your internet is down for more than 15-20mins, pick up your phone and lodge a complaint and keep the docket number. The more you do it the more they know your line has an issue which needs fixing, nobody has magic powers to know you are not getting good service, it needs to be told. This also helps your case when you want them to take drastic steps like upgrading your line. They can simply check how many times you really complained and your request is legit.

Anyway, try it and see if it helps. Tell them past 6/8/10months you barely got good internet and it keeps disconnecting every now and then which makes it difficult to use it at all. etc etc

Now the router screenshot, yes thats what I been asking for past few days/weeks from you.
The data rate is the downstream you see. Your downstream is still on 2304 kbps this is the number limited by ISPs to control the speed you get. Right now yours is limited to 2mbps. For 8mbps should be more 8000-9000kbps.

What you need to call/meet and tell them is that your data rate is not upgraded, read my replies before this and tell them to try 8mbps then 6mbps etc.

I wish I was Danny, so I can tell them to bend the knee everytime I meet them until one day on their death bed they would say 'Haan bhai.. I bend the knee' (minus the boatsex).

Hahahaha, that was a good one. If I were Dany I would just have drogon wreak havoc on the whole of them, but then again, I fear the Night King probably resides in the MTNL building.

Okay, so I'm going to try getting in touch with them again. I really hate contacting people who are so brazen about being unhelpful. They give me that vibe that they wish I would just go away, lol.

So just to be clear, if they say that my area can't get a speed higher than the existing one, should the downstream still show something higher than 2 mbps? For example is it possible the downstream shows 8000 kbps, but because of the physical restrictions I still only get 2300 kbps. Or will the router page show a higher downstream only if I can actually get a higher download speed? I'm just trying to figure out how to convince them of this pointand to try and increase my speed. Because right now their go to is simply to repeat "yeah, you can't get higher than this in your locality". They won't even hear a different argument.
