okay.. did it work with other routers? Can you try it when you visit some shopping mall's food court ?
it worked in the US. Tried on multiple routers in different cities. I had tried in a mall here in Mumbai about 3-4 months back. Had not worked that time either. Is that because we use 11 instead of 6 in the US?

Yaa channel in Asia is different from channel in US/ EU.Have to change channel to use my laptop in most hotspots in US.

Strange enough. I did not have to change the channel for my laptop anywhere in the US. ANyway, you've been of great help. Thanks a ton. I will try and reset my phone and see if it starts working after that.

Hey netfreak. strange thing happened. I disabled encryption and now the phone connects absolutely fine. But........ (there's always a but), now the laptop has issues connecting to it. it keeps disconnecting sometimes with a message that "there is interference between the ruoter and the laptop" It connects and lets me surf; but then disconnects from time to time with that error message.

Looks like some simple (but obscure) setting problem. I have this sneaky feeling that if you reset everything (phone / router / card in laptop) then things will start working. At this point you can start securing the network one step at a time.

Yeah, I have a similar feeling. If I can surf using phone and laptop (intermittently), then I guess most things are correct. May just be a stupid setting somewhere (which a novice like me might not catch). Will try and bug you if something major (hopefully not) goes wrong.

Man, wi-fi never ceases to amaze (read confuse) me. I changed the encryption key and everything's fine now. Laptop connects fine, mobile connects fine. everything is hunky dory.
