wow wow, will try to spend this weekend reading the stuff... hope for some analysis posted here and elsewhere...btw i can open the PDFs in FireFox if I remove the single quotes from the link ....

I already like the individuals' responses like "Dua Consulting" that warns operators claiming Rs 700-900 cost per subscriber per month for wireless broadband (3G) whereas he (dua/they) say its more like Rs 150-200 and the greedy corporates are trying to make windfall gains.

Also Reliance snippet says by 2014 demand will be like 1-2 mbps !!! hahaha... here I am just about satisfied with my 8 mbps connection and already hungering for more :)

Lets see what the further analysis and discussions (and results) come out of the NBP consultations all over the net...

I wonder if this thread can be made sticky... or any main thread for "NBP" topic...

Thanks for making sticky.

Consumer Protection Agency, Agartala has a weak response but at least they say define broadband as minimum 2 mbps while AIrtel/Reliance are saying make it 512kbps haha...

Now quickly looking at the international biggies:

Google: Very brief response. Starts off with their "open internet" message :) expected.

Intel seem to be playing safe saying "no comment" in many places - I guess they don't want to appear to be biased toward their own agenda. They do mention US broadband govt site to compare with.

Microsoft's is wordy and will read it at leisure over weekend :)

BSNL babus response not too bad - they are very positive/recommending use of optical/fibre for wired and latest wireless like WIMAX/LTE... though no suggestions on "how best" to go about it. For the definition, they say "512 Kbps by Dec, 2010, 2 Mbps by Dec. 2011 and 4 Mbps by Dec. 2014" not bad. But buggers say "No, the Broadband tariffs are already low." for question 22 about tarriffs! Good point about NIXI being free of charges. They say "anchor" universities like IIT/IIM should have 1 gbps by Dec 2011 and others to follow soon.

BTW anyone else reading through these responses - has anyone seen mention of "unbundling" or "community" fibre/copper lines to stimulate competition and bring down prices? Another point has anyone seen any mention about comparing to other countries like Japan/Sweden/South Korea for their ultra-fast and cheap broadband?

Open House Discussion (OHD) on the Consultation Paper on National Broadband Plan

ANyone from IBF in Hyderabad (itzmynet?) interested in attending that OHD and taking suggestions from this thread there? :D

Since this country is moving towards a free market policy, the government will only be able to influence prices through its public sector companies for now. It seems the broadband reforms have been put on the backburner thus giving private players free reign to do as they please and extort maximum margins. Once the govt aggressively pushes for broadband penetration, this sector will become a repeat of the telecom boom.

The telecom regulator, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is expected to come out with recommendations on a national broadband plan in the next few days, which according to analysts could result in lower broadband tariffs.

They say the current tariffs are on the higher side due to limited competition amongst service providers.

"I think we would aim at more than 100 million (10 crore) subscribers by 2014 and this is other than wireless mobile broadband, which itself is expected to be more than five crore," TRAI chairman J S Sarma told reporters on the sidelines of the IAMAI India Digital Media Summit event in New Delhi yesterday.

According to the regulator it was targeting a 10-fold in broadband subscribers to 100 million by 2014. There are 1.03 crore broadband subscribers in the country now.

Regarding pushing broadband growth in the country, Sarma said TRAI would shortly come up with recommendations on the National Broadband Plan (NBP). Under the plan, all gram panchayats would be covered by 2012 and villages with a population in excess of 500 to be covered by 2013.

In a consultation paper, TRAI has stated that the factors inhibiting growth of affordable broadband include non- availability of national broadband network to provide connectivity up to village level, non- availability of content in vernacular language and affordability of broadband.

Would this make a change in the broadband spectrum? :iplay:

The present definition of 256 Kbps always on connection for
broadband is too meager as compared to international developments.
There is a school of thought, which advocates that many bandwidth
hungry applications are not getting developed as they see no
business model due to restrictive capacity of the Internet in India. A
group of consumers feel that broadband must be re-defined to
support minimum download speed of atleast 2 Mbps per subscriber.
According to them, it will drive service providers to upgrade their
network and fuel development of many user friendly applications.
The use of high speed Internet will help to really explore potential of
broadband and will result in enhanced demand of such services.
Views of stakeholders are invited.
