i Just got bsnl 256k broadband connection. Most of the time I am unable to log on to the internet. When i try to connect i get the "error 815" message. I get the foll. message:-
"windows confirmed that "Primary DNS Server" is currently online but is not responding to connection attempts at this time.

This usually means that a firewall is running somewhere between the two computers and is blocking "domain". Windows has confirmed that Windows firewall on this computer is correctly configured to allow this connection. However a remote firewall might be blocking your connection. "

I am using windows vista and the firewall on my computer is configured correctly.
Anyone got any idea what this means and whether it's because of bsnl or because my network connection isn't configured correctly?? has anyone faced similar problems before??

Even when it gets connected it doesn't last for more that 12 hrs. After that it gets disconnected and doesn't connect back for a while. It is not a network problem since i am able to ping and the inter

I also notice one more thing---- when i connect to the internet , my network and sharing center shows two things---

Broadband and network. Sometimes my network access is local and internet whereas during other times network access is local only. It is during those times(when network access is local only) that i start to face a whole lotta problems ------ erractic torrent speeds frequent disconnections, etc, etc.

Anyone got any idea what to do----BTW, i am using windows vista and windows firewall.

Re: Vista Wireless and "Local Only" Access - TechNet Forums
Extracts:
My best suggestion for people out there: If you have a router/AP that is Pre-Vista, search your manufacturer's website for new firmware and look for anything that was posted Post-Vista (any date after Jan. 2007). *IMPORTANT*- If you use the incorrect firmware your router will cease to function.

Or, if you don't want to deal with upgrading firmware best bet is to go out to your local electronic store and buy one that has the "Vista Certified" label.

However - did you try opening the Network and sharing center and clicking onto the (inactive) connection between the LAN (or whatever connection) and Internet in the picture? The click makes Vista diagnose the trouble and (ultimately) offers you to reset the adapter. This usually helps me with the wired connection problems.

unfortunately tried all that and still no use!! there are times when it keeps getting disconnected ard 30-40 times an hour!! Okay, can someone tell me, what the netbios settings should be in the advanced TCP/IP settings ?? Also should the network be set to a private network or public network(network and sharing center in vista) ??

one more thing:-
the modem is set to PPPoE dailing. VPI:0, VCI: 35

Also In WINS configuration , my netbios settings is set to default(.i.e use netbios settings from the DHCP server and i have checked the 'enable LMHOSTS lookup.

Under the Ip settings tab, my interface metric is 4248 and have deselected the automatic metric.

And under the DNS tab(Vista's Network and sharing center---------->Network view status--->Properties---->TCP/IPv4 properties---->advanced tab),i have selected the "append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes". i Have ticked the "append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix."

Also ticked, "register this connection's addresses in DNS".

Soomeone tell me have i set the connections wrong ??

In your TCP/IP properties , if there is an IPV6 listed delete it completely.Somebody suggested this , and I don't remember the thread. will link later. Para two : In present set up post the Ipconfig/all information. . and the modem model details.

Ip address:- 192 .168 . 1 . 4
Subnet mask:- 255 . 255 . 255 . 0
default gateway:- 192 . 168 . 1 . 1

preferred DNS server:- 218 . 248 . 255 . 145
Alternate DNS server:-218 . 248 . 255 . 193

My modem is ZTE ZXDSL 831AII

these are in my LAN area connection properties. In the broadband connection properties ,it is set to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server adddress automatically"

Also how do you delete IPv6.there is no such option available.

@sanoj I think your chinese modem is not compatible for VISTA.
1. In Lan area connection properties also
select assign automatic IP address. and DNS
For DNS you can try opendns 208.67.220.220 and
208.67.222.222

2. dotNETwizard.NET :: Code is Magic Disabling IPv6 in Vista
for IPv6 removal.
Could you not just disable it first and try ? Say uncheck it ?

3. Googling your modem details , to check for Vista compatability.
