we restart the lan modems once in a couple of days when we sort of feel that the speeds are getting lower. but that is mostly psycological.

Can you note if your IP address has changed when you restart the modem ?If it does then hoggers are being put into a slow(er) pool. But i'm thinking not. Since a reset is fairly quite quick meaning that your IP address would not have been grabbed by some one else. I am also assuming you are running an OS that can deal with such IP changes w.o requiring a reboot like 2K or XP.

well ofcourse IP changes. and i doubt if restarting will get u the same IP... and speed is constant on airtel. we have not noticed any drop down in speeds after restarting the modem at anytime.

Was trying to figure out whether the slow down was coming from the LAN modem or because of "other" reasons ;) If you get a new IP, then yes the speed should be as you expect. I have a friend in Oz that does this when he notices a slowdown, to get assigned to a less crowded pool.Getting the same IP back has happened to me when i was on a cable modem in the US. Does not happen every time but can happen. Sometimes i would lose the connection and was told to do a ipconfig /release folowd by ipconfig /renew. They did 24hr leases on the IP so had to do this in case of a hiccup.

if i use the LAN modem, will it affect downloading or uploading from p2p apps. i dont have an extra USB port.

getting the same IP on restart is pure luck and completely by chance...there's nothing to make sure that u get the same IP that u had before the restart...coz u get the IPs from a pool of IPs...if u get the same quite often, that means that all the IPs have already been taken from the pool and most of the ppl don't restart their modems... :)
