New channels war shots up in Tamil Nadu
Monday - Aug 18, 2008Televisionpoint.com Correspondent | Chennai
The television channel war is hotting up in Tamil Nadu with national networks and others jumping into the fray with the 20 regional entertainment and news television channels already there in the Rs 1000 crore advertising and subscription market.

Zee News Ltd is set to launch Zee Tamil, an entertainment channel within a few months. TV9, an Andhra Pradesh based network having news channels in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Gujarati and a religious channel Sanskriti, is entering Tamil Nadu with the motto - independent news for independent people. This in a state where every political party, except the BJP, already has a channel or is about to start one.

The Marans brothers, Kalanidhi and Dayanidhi, both grand-nephews of chief minister M. Karunanidhi, were the first to start a television channel in the state - Sun TV. Then the AIADMK, after its initial misadventure with JJ TV, started Jaya TV and now has a 24-hour news channel and entertainment channel too.

The PMK, which found its voice unheard, started Makkal television with news, news analysis and social issues being its main content.

The Congress too has its own channels. TNCC leader Thangka Balu started Mega TV and industrialist H. Vasanth Kumar runs Vasanth TV.

After the DMK leaders fell out with the Marans, the party launched Kalaignar TV. Not wanting to be left out, the Communists are also seriously considering a channel.

"We have plans to launch a television channel very soon. We want to give wider coverage to sociopolitical activities," C. Mahendran, leader, CPI, has said.

The DMDK started by actor-politician Vijaykanth which attracted a sizeable chunk of voters (around 10 per cent) in the last elections plans to launch Captain TV by April.

Officials at TV9 say the competition does not deter them. "We have a time tested content that we are sure will work in Tamil Nadu. We definitely recognise reasonable potential to start a 24 hour news channel."

"The viewers will get more choices, and the cinema industry benefits too. With the tough competition among entertainment channels, the price of movie rights is going up," said an executive of Sun TV.
