It seems 'aniketvb' has brought in a new view to the TV scene in India.

In my geographic area, Tata-Sky has started installation of ducting and dish for DTH. They are talking of trials in this coming July. Also, they mention about a 'box' ... probably a set top box.

This causes me to wonder ... would I need a seperate box for the desktop? I suppose the box will give an analog signal thru a coaxial cable to the standard TV, so same should work for the desktop with TV card. However, the need for a box remains. Can anyone confirm this? Already, DTH has 4 million installaitions in India, mostly 'DD direct+' or whatever.

It seems to me that IPTV is the best bet ... thru our infamous MTNL wired connection. This is their 'three-way option'. Reliance and Airtel is also talking about IPTV sometime in July. Kindly read, Business World, 12th June edition, page 46. Bharti Airtel has begun 'free trials' with IPTV in Gurgaon.

So it seems to me that the TV tuner cards will just die away. Comments please.

Best wishes.

In current scene, you will need a TV Tuner card. And also the "box" mentioned by Tata-Sky people. That box is what I actually meant by digital-to-analog converter. I am not sure of the IPTV thingie, never seen trials/demos yet, cant comment on that. And who knows , with MTNL/BSNL for IPTV they may say, 30hrs/per month at 500bux and then Rs.20 per hour extra!!!!!!! ;)Going by the current absurd data caps in broadband.

i dont think IPTV is going to become mainstream in India anytime soonMTNL doesnt even provide unlimited broadband connection

i am waiting for vista to release(ya, long time to wait!)but the plus point is that the hardwares will also get better as the time comes (for vista release) and would make a virtually future-proof machine!

well I dont understand what Microsoft has done here....You need a supercomputer to run just the OS!!! ANd more for the apps you will run..Man I never understand that...!!!BTW , is there any option in Vista so that I can reduce /eliminate the eye candy and use it on my good old machine?

I guess Vista has options to reduce its eye candy so it can be run on older PCs. Vista was some pretty advanced stuff on the drawing board and it has remained that way. The actual version of Vista has less that 1/10th the features of what was originally planned.

We have diverted from my issue of costing for a Intel Pentium D930 processor mated to an Intel D945GPM mobo with 2x512 MB DDR2 SDRAM 533 dual channel memory system. Assuming a good front use cabinet with 350 Watt PS, what would be the budget for next month. Alternately ... I have been surfing a bit ... how about budget for a AMD Socket AM2 Athlon 64 X2 processor 3800+ mated to a M2NPV-MX Asus amd mobo and the same memory and cabinet as above. I find that none of the sites give proper pricing for AMD. Oh yes, forget about Microsoft Vista Beta2, its actually epsilon (alpha, beta, delta, gamma, epsilon). The wise will wait and wait till all the 'service packs' are in before loading up. Best wishes.
