So as I have been discussing in some other thread. I am planning to purchase new PC.

But before that I am just testing the old PC which I almost NEVER used. (harddisk used only for 45 hours in total)

I started this PC after like 8-9 years. But it looks completely brand new.

It has 3 fans in total. CPU Fan, Cabinet fan and PSU fan.

Here is what happens - randomly:
  1. I press power button, all fans start and switch off in 2-3 seconds (without beep sound)
  2. I press power button, all fans start and switch off after 5-10 seconds (after beep sound)
  3. I press power button, all fans start and OS boots (and then switches off from 2 mins to 1 hour)
  4. After switching off, it does not restart by pressing power button OR pressing reset button
  5. To restart either I have to turn off/on wall switch OR press power button for 7-8 seconds, release it and then press it again.
I was able to install Linux yesterday and then it stayed on for almost 1 hours (or may be little less) and then switched off directly.

I believe it is SMPS problem but just wanted to ask if there could be any other reason, like motherboard going bad etc.?

Thank you.

Photos attached - in case someone wants to have a look.

No i dont have spare SMPS and I dont have thermal paste either.

All nearby computer part shops are closed.

So I cant repair old PC and cant buy new PC either... stuck as of now.

So I got time and cleaned motherboard once again. Removed all cables and plugged them again.

But nope I didnt solve the problem.

I dont read "thermal warning" when it reboots. I am wondering it is thermal heat issue as sometimes it just does not switch on i.e. fan hardly rotates 1 circle and machine switches off. If it was heating problem then it would atleast takes 4-5 seconds to heat.

So next I am planning to order thermal paste. @Nishant is there any reason to suggest a costly one? Its like one time use only. Spending like 476Rs for few drops of paste is crazy.

I see many pastes costing 150-200Rs .. there are even 50-100Rs paste.

Some are injection styled paste... some are gum style paste.

Any suggestions for good yet inexpensive paste?

Thank you.

@amish , install some app like speedfan which will show a temperature graph of cpu. If its a thermal issue (i also suspect so), you should be able to see it.

I also suggest coolermaster. Also, you can reuse it for your new build.

I'm not very sure whether it is a thermal issue as if it was, BIOS would clearly intimate about it on next boot. Most likely the PSU and there is a slight chance it could be the motherboard too.

@eriek_halenx @Nishant
already ordered River fox one

And I agree with Nishant that it does not look like thermal issue, because with thermal issue it would not shutdown in 1 second sometimes.

Sometimes, no sooner I press "power" button, fan turns a bit and immediately machine turns off.

Can it be problem of processor itself?

Could be anything..most likely seems to be power supply issue(SMPS)..also observe the heatsink fan..maybe it's shutting off after starting initially..try changing the RAM's Dimm slot..remove graphics card and use onboard graphics if that is an option...am just thinking aloud and trying to rule out any malfunctioning hardware..
