Heh. I remember the package selection in openSUSE 10.2 was a nightmare. This is the only thing I don't like in openSUSE.An openSUSE developer - "Arre ye bhi hai? Ye bhi daal do! Aur yeh kya yeh bhi hai!!! OMFG ROFL LOL!!! Ye bhi daal do!"And the irritating thing is that most of the packages are selected in the default installation. So I had to spend a lot of time selecting the packages. Moreover YaST hogs too much of RAM, and would just kill my poor old 256 Mb stick .

Ya, package selection downloading was a pain. Its like the suse engineers arent aware or dont care about third-world countries with third-class broadband But I'm hopeful this problem is gone away (optimised packaging lists) in this version...edit: which is why during install i unchecked the option to "add online repositories" and avoided online update as well

@vishalraoWhile installing VMware its asking about IIS for VMware Management. Is it necessary to install IIS for running multiple OS?

nope, skip/ignore/reject that IIS option. i think IIS is need for running a web-based console... keep going...

ok.. thanks.. Started installing.Update: I installed VMware and created a new virtual machine "OpenSuse 10.3". When i started the virtual machine, after some time i get an error "no bootable CD,floppy or hard disk was detected..." Have i missed something?Update 2: Got it!! I didn't mention the CD ROM drive to use to install suse.

Now, there's a problem in the installation process: It detected my Windows partition for the GRUB bootloader and I moved Windows to the top of the list and made it the default during the installation screens. But the installer needs to reboot once to continue and it expects to have openSUSE as the default (it doesnt show a boot menu with specified delay) and when it boots into Windows and I reboot and try to go into openSUSE the bootup fails with a partition not found error. So do not mess with the GRUB boot settings, do it after you finish installation and boot into your account for the first time.

Also, during install do not select "add online repositories" because that adds a painful 15 min to the install time, then it selects an additional 760mb for installing off the Net!

So, without the additional options the install took less than 30 min on my PC...

Even though it detected my nVidia 7600 card I can't find Compiz-Fusion although I see a post with some 1-click links. So it looks like I have to install the drivers myself then install desktop effects manually. Not as clean and direct as Ubuntu

OK, I found two pages, first for 1-click install for nVidia, the second is the 1-click install of Compiz-Fusion...

that's it i am not testing any other distro for now. ubuntu works on this desktop. would have to see for the laptop however.

im sure ubuntu will work well on laptops also...anyhoo, there was some kind of crash during the compiz install, i just dismissed the "crash handler" dialog and the installation continued but failed later with a "package not found" error. restarted the install and it completed this time.screensavers are running smoother now. but i cant find a button to enable desktop effects, might need to run the command line enabler. sax (x11 configurator) says it cant enable 3d because my card/driver doesnt support it but i know 3d is working because of the screensaver improvement.update: bah, my screen goes all white when i enable compiz so no wobbly windows on opensuse for me at the moment. but opensuse/kde looks better than ubuntu/gnome possibly.will try fedora 8 test 3 tomorrow...

I remember that the last time i used opensuse 10 i found it very bloated , package manager sucked , online repository wasn't great either . I stick with ubuntu or knoppix !
