OpenWRT compatible router in 2022

I am looking for a new router that is OpenWRT compatible and has good WiFi range. Initially I was considering TP-Link Archer A7, but it has a single core CPU and also seems outdated being launched a number of years ago.

Now Archer A6 V3 also seems to supported by OpenWRT now. It is dual core, but is more like an entry level router.

I also looked a Asus routers, but ASUS 58U does not really seem to be available now.

Are there any other routers that I can consider, which are OpenWRT compatible and have a good WiFi range?

What's the best option available right now? budget as little as possible with the best value for Money but under 10k. my main requirement is wan failover dual wan but it should happen very quickly like within 3-4 seconds so clients don't even notice it.


if this can be done with any other way, pls let me know. i have Asus RT Ax3000 but its taking around 50 seconds even with Merlin and custom script

3 or 4 seconds is too short. You'd have session state reliability issues, if your primary is even slightly unstable.

There are not a lot of valid options at 10K for OpenWRT, as most come with MTU7621.
You will find them even in devices costing 2-4K.

I was checking it Mikrotik router which can do this but apparently it takes 20 second to detect wan down and this is not customisable? Any idea?

@hariselio i saw on youtube video, it mention it will continuously ping every second but consider as wan down only after it fails for 20 seconds , correct me if that's a wrong info

i doubt on that, personally using simple route distance based setup and its instant( or max 2 seconds) when main wan is down. And when main is up, again switch from backup to main takes about 5 seconds.

@hariselio great, so you basically have instant failover. Do you have ability to configure how sensitive it is for failover to happen? Also this setup pings to any DNS server or your isp gateway because failover generally will be faster when cable is plugged out but when cable is there but internet is down due to fiber cut for example, then takes more time

Also for a gigabit connection, is basic model like HP ac lite works or need to buy better one? My use case is purely wan failover

@droid basic model cannot handle gigabit connection... i guess you may need to go for ax2 or hex s 2025 model at least.

agree, it may take more time incase interface is active, but internet is not there. i did not test this. As you mentioned, i tested by disconnecting the cable
