Is it normal to experience considerable packet loss and wildly fluctuating speeds ?
I ran a ping /t to google.co.in and a few other websites and there seems to be dropped packets every 20-25 seconds or even more. The time
Is there any way to fix this ?

Also, Speedtest websites give widely differing results based on the time of day and the website used.

Forgot to mention, the round trip time on packets on a ping fluctuates considerably e.g. for google, it's between 76ms and 119ms

Here's a typical ping log from when the internet starts acting up:

1)ping ur local lan gateway..ie modem/router to rule out problems with the modem/lan card etc2) Do a ping to the BSNL gateway..this will tell u if the problem is between u and BSNL g/w only or a general problem with BSNL's upstream network

ping to localhost ? (Tried that, works fine)
I'm directly connected to bsnl anyhow

Pinging Bsnl seems to be fine ~40ms round trip time.

Pinging www.bsnl.co.in [218.248.240.20] with 32 bytes of data:

The packet loss with Bsnl is a lot less (about 1 or 2 every 2-3 minutes). Still there shouldn't be any ^^
Pinging websites other than bsnl (especially servers outside india) is a totally different issue.

@rsen
TTL values seem high.
Try
tcp/ip optimizser from
speedguide.net.
also
Easy MTU - Download - Download CHIP.eu

Thanks, checking out the TCP optimizer from speedguide.net, seems pretty good.
What kind of packet loss is normal ?

Not ping to local host thats a ping to ur lan card..i meant ping the modem/router from ur computer..also u can try changing the MTU values as suggested by essbebe . However, looks more like a network problem of BSNL One or two dropped packets in 2-3 mins should be acceptable..though ideally there shouldn't be any if u are pinging the local BSNL gateway

I have the same packet loss problem since Wednesday. At least 5-10% packets go missing and as an online gamer its seriously effecting my gameplay. My friend who is from Airtel has zero packet loss to the same server. My packet loss is absolutely zero till it leaves BSNL backbone so I think its not our local exchange fault. NIB has to fix it. I'm from Hyderabad btw.

yup. kinda sucks really. Seems to be a lot better during off-peak hours though.
btw what kind of games do you play ? I tried warcraft and cod4 and it seems unplayable with the shitty latency and the packet loss.
