@mcx:ur distance chart is fully wrong! :p How can coimbatore 150kms radially from kotaym?no way!may be 200kms.and Blore 500+kms may be!and I dont receive any of these radio channels!may be ur in a very high altitude place(pala, kurivilingad etc)? or having a outside aerial antenna :S

according to fm statiosn all the private fm stations have same power of 50 kms (air distance from the transmission tower) due to some geographical advantage, air flow etc it may travel more than that distance

iam from kunnamkulam i get fm relay from coimbatore around 150 kms (road distance) on my car audio but sound is not very clear

and another intresting thing is thrissur is near to my place kunamkulam around 23 kms(road) around 15 kms (air) here all the fm stations (4 stations) from thrissur have very poor signal strength and also over lapping betweens channels

overlapping betweens channels is really intresting because best fm (95.0) thrissur and best fm (95.0) kannur . kannur is around 200 kms away and thrissur is only 23 kms so just think the signal strength of fm stations from thrissur

Hi Prakash, Thank u for ur comments. About the distance: i measure the distance by using the distance scale tool in google earth ie the straight distance between the two places, i dont know whether it is exact but i believe in their sattelite imageries and 3d construction of the earths terrain ,i was also surprised when I found that most of the places appeared nearer than I thought.I live in ettumanoor 10 km north and little bit east of kottayam town. When I measure the distance to coimbatore i take one point as ettumanoor, second point i take around the central part of kovai city as i dont know the exact location of the transmitter in the city, then i find that it is in and around 155 km approximately, the transmitter may be in the outskirts of the city but 5 or 6 km difference is negligible as it is already a distant station.similary when bangalore was measured it was below 400km,Thirunelveli 165 km..Kakkanad, Kochi 44 km ..Devikulam 75 km Kodaikanal 125 km....all from ettumanoor. Please post ur comments. About my place it is not high altitude it is near sea level maybe about 20 or 25 meters above MSL.I would really love to know the reception in high altitude places in the ditrict like Vagamon 1100 m above MSL. Forgive me, I forgot to mention that I use a roof mounted external antenna i made it for the frequency around 100 Mhz,and I turn it to different directions, and I can tune to fm stations from kochi, devikulam, trivandrum, thirunelveli, coimbatore, with ease.If the weather is good I do get fm stations from Thrissur,Kozhikode Kannur kodaikanal Madurai Trichy nagercoil mangalore kodagu mysore bangalore many stations from Sri lanka and sometimes even chennai (575 km according to google earth) But these stations will be fluctuating in signal strength, sometimes disappear from the spectrum and appear again, sometimes become powerful enough to knock out a local station especially in night. But I have a lot of interference these days as more stations are starting with the same frequency across the state and most of the times it becomes un- listenable.Yesturday I had good reception of Thrissur Stations in the night. Without using external antenna I get only devikulam and kochi, nothing else.My car radio picks up TVM stations thirunelveli stations and kodaikanal in addition to kochi and devikulam but only in night .Following rain or thunderstorm local stations become clearer and distant stations sometimes weaker. Now these are my findings I'm not a professional I'm just a radio enthusiast and really like to hear from fm lovers .I hope and pray that new Ekm stations woud be powerful enough for listeners in this part of the state. With regards......mcx

^well,IMHO,dont believe that satellite imagary cr@p!those images are accurate for US,EU,China,Korea, japan and also big cities, national capitals etc.the radial distance shown in Google are 90% wrong I can say that cause no way radially that Blore can be within 400kms of Kotyam. But still I think ur lucky enough to get all these stations in Ettumannur.Only MIL can measure using satellites for correct distances in India IIRC.

Hi Prakash, thanks for the reply what is MIL and IIRC ? How can I get the correct distance ? I plotted the distance from the oxford atlas this time i measured from kottayam not from ettumanoor still I got the distance of Bangalore within 400 km, Kovai within 160 km , seems to tally with the google earth. What about reception of ekm, tcr, tvm stations in muvattupuzha. Here AIR Kochi the nearest station, the power is ok but the signal is distorted. It affects the treble sound , more for rainbow 107.5.But Devikulam even though mono and more distant than ekm the signal quality is good.Is it due to multipathing ?, I have posted this in other forum but nobody replied, will it be affecting the reception of new ekm pvt stations here , the same way?

Last time when I was in Kottaym, my car audio picked Ananthapuri FM (TVM) and another hindi station (I think radio mirchi, dont know from where). Recently 4 new FM station started at TVM which are more powerful (more clearer, so I assume that they are more powerful) than Ananthapuri FM. Please try to tune into Club FM (94.3), Radio Mirchi (98.3) Big FM (92.7) and SFM (93.5). Let me know whether you are able to get those...

Hi, In kottayam town my car audio picks up radio mirchi big 92.7 from tvm well.club fm not too good in strength.93.5 its getting overlap from kovai nellai suryan fms and tvm, kodai 100.5 other stations from kovai nellai are also received in open areas in the town besides kochiI think the power of tvm stations received here is radio mirchi>big92.7>ananthapuri fm>club fm>s fm generally but may wax and wane

Hai Friends ,
Iam residing near kayamkulam in Alpy dist (100km away from TVM). By using external antenna whether I could receive the new FM channels.
Then what type of antenna ? Which is good? Yagi or dipole or loop ?
if any body could help me then let me give the measurements.

U can get all the 5 fm stations from Tvm maybe thirunelveli stations also in kayamkulam, because they have descent power to be received in 100 125 km distance .Use a yagi antenna.I think u will have good reception there unless there are large buildings or a hilly area immediately south of your neighbourhood obstructing the signal path (in that case u may need to mount the antenna higher). .the dimensions of the antennae are clearly mentioned by mundle 2002 https://broadband.forum/fm-radio-stations/13479-guide-receive-far-away-fm-stations/2/
there are also booster circuits mentioned in the forum.Or try tuning to those stations in your car radio with the arial fully extended and car parked outside the porch in open area, usually the car radios are the most powerful fm radios available here in kerala they will pick up the weakest of the signals.

I was able to tune into SFM ,Tirunelveli ,Devikulam AIR , Nagercoil AIR,and some srilankan stations from Trivandrum by using tree mounted antennae. But now after local fm stations started i cudnt tune into any distant stations.. One more thing, All FM Stations in Kerala are allowed to operate on a range of 50km only so as to avoid overlapping. In tamilnade , they are allowed to operate on much more large area like 100 kms. So the transmitter strength will be higher there.
