Looks like I finally found an app that block on-click popups that a lot of sites use. Firefox has an internal feature I believe to block this behavior. Chrome doesn't.

Block popups and popunders no matter where you click on a page.

When a popup or a popunder is blocked, a notification appears. You can view blocked content by clicking on its link in the notification, or click “Allow Always” to allow future popups from that site.

The whitelist can be managed via the extension's options page. If you're signed-in to Chrome, your settings will be synced across devices.

Our addon uses advanced, proactive technology to enable the blocking of complicated overlays and popups. This technology requires connection with our database that contains a list of websites and custom blocking solutions for them. In order to identify the necessary blocking solutions that must be accessed from our database, we collect website browsing data.

this app causes a few issues. some sites you do not want converted to amp and there is no whitelist feature so you have to disable the app to access non-amp pages (or a different browser). reddit is one of them. i have no idea why reddit would use amp when the actual content is in the comments which is not loaded in amp version.

the other issue is that it causes problems on payment pages where popups are opened. it blocks them causing a lot of issues. so i have learnt to block it before using a payment gateway that generally opens a popup to get the otp.

Uninstalled this extension from everywhere. It's extremely aggressive and can block regular sites from functioning properly which have absolutely no connection with popups,
