CHENNAI. . now having AIRTEL broadband connection and paying Rs.999/= per month for the past about more than five year (perhaps even ten years) . The internet speed is as abysmally ping 38, D/L 2.13 and U/L 0.42. One of Airtel service engineers who cam to rectify some other problem said I cannot have XLSTREAM even though I am getting SMS from aIRTEL asking me to change to xlstream box. I am 94 years old and may not be very savvy in these technologies. Airtel service engineer seems to imply that separate wiring has to be done which I do not understand as I am long since getting internet (web browsing and ema) for so man years. will somebody explain to me as if for Dummies

What is Xlstream?? I think you meant Xstream box which a hybrid box (DISH + OTT apps). For live channels you will need to install their Dish. And for OTT apps your speed is too low to watch them i think. Also you cant just watch their OTT apps without an active DISH plan.

Hi Sir, I am guessing you're on DSL connection i.e, on landline copper cable, because of this you're experincing slow speeds. You need to ask Airtel person for fiber installation, if he refuses try to reach out to airtel directly for fiber upgradation. The fiber plan is generally called Xstream Fibernet. For fiber installation they need to install a new cable like the copper one.

2mbps/0.5mbps is slow even by airtel adsl standards. First, you need to downgrade to the 499 plan. You are paying too much money currently.

Secondly, if you have a smartphone, get the airtel thanks app and see what plans are available on your internet connection. It’s possible that airtel is still stuck on adsl plans at your location but as you said that you are getting messages from airtel to upgrade to xstream… it is likely that your area now has fiber connections available.

Fiber is the only connection upgrade that would require fresh wiring as it uses optic cables instead of copper cable you likely have at the moment. So yes, fresh wiring would be needed.

I suggest contacting airtel support through whatever mode is available to you and get them to upgrade your connection to fiber. And since you are on 2mbps connection right now, just get the 499 rupee 40mbps fiber plan. You would also need a new device from airtel (should be free) along with wiring (again should be free I believe).

thank both of you. Now it is clear. I have already changed to 499 plan. I shall wait for downgrading of virus effect then I shall ask them to plan new wiring for xlstream. They have already offered it and I shall wait for some more time to ask for new copper connection. thanks once again

just to be clear. you need a fiber optic cable connection. you already have copper. airtel support 40mbps on copper if they have something called VDSL in your area. But it seems your area has fiber so you would need to get fiber cable installed at your place.

They have already offered it and I shall wait for some more time to ask for new copper connection.
Sir you don't need a new copper connection as you already have one for which you are clearly overpaying.
Either ask them to upgrade your existing copper connection to Airtel Xstream Fiber or else apply for a new one if they're not not ready to upgrade and terminate the existing copper connection.
