As is widely reported in media reports in last 24 hours, Qualcomm which is among the biggest telecom hardware and chipset design companies in the world and inventors of CDMA and most of 3G technology, has decided to bid for Broadband wireless Access spectrum that is to be auctioned by government starting 9th April, 2010.

IMHO, this is the most important news for Broadband market in India for 2010 because:

1. Qualcomm want to tie up with existing cellphone operators for 2G networks and also for tower infrastructure and build their network using LTE technology also known as 4G. As most of us already know LTE is being commercially rolled out in a few developed countries. Thus India will jump directly from 2G to 4G networks which is the fastest speed wireless broadband network technology around. This when the biggest telecom companies of the world like AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone (in Europe) etc. will launch their own LTE networks. So we will catch up with the best of the world at least in terms of the technology.

2. Very few companies in the world have launched wimax networks and LTE is emerging as a de-facto standard technology for brodband wireless across the world resulting in more choice of handsets and dongles and such for customers at a lower price.

3. Customers from India will have seamless roaming available to them when roaming in most of the developed countries of the world. Something that wimax technology will not ensure because very few operators in developed countries are talking about wimax rollout.

4. No Indian telecom company has deeper pockets than the Qualcomm. So Qualcomm can put the money on table for fast network rollout. Chances are that we will see LTE rollout at least in metro cities by the end of calender year 2010 or Q1-2011.

So, here I am hoping that Qualcomm wins a slot out of the two in broadband wireless access spectrum auction.

Wow promising news, thanks for posting!

Looks like the Wimax Forum is against allocation of BWA spectrum to Qualcomm as TD LTE is not a ratified standard.

Qualcomm bid may result in hoarding: WiMax Forum
New Delhi, March 17

WiMax Forum in India on Tuesday said that if Qualcomm wins the bid for broadband spectrum it may result in hoarding of air waves since Time Division Long Term Evolution (TD LTE) is an untested technology with no chip support or devices.

“Broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum for 2.3 Ghz is globally harmonised for WiMAX. No other global technology is having this spectrum, leave alone TD LTE. TD LTE is never ever promoted by Qualcomm today anywhere in the world. Qualcomm has been promoting FDD LTE in 700 Mhz and 2.6 Ghz band,” said Mr C S Rao, Chairman, WiMax Forum India.

TD LTE-based chipsets are yet to be launched by anyone in the semiconductor industry as the intellectual property righty for this is predominantly Chinese-based.

‘Adopt global tech'

“It is rather strange for Qualcomm to promote TD LTE for introduction only in India when all over the globe it has been promoting LTE Rel.8 (FDD). India needs to adopt a mature, scalable and truly global technology like WiMAX,” Mr Rao said.

“I am concerned that this move by Qualcomm, if they emerge as winners in the bid, may result in the hoarding of precious spectrum for another two or three years. Thus, India would lose an opportunity serve 20 million subscribers on a slot of 20Mhz by 2012. India cannot afford losing such precious resource of spectrum for immature ,untested and unproven technologies. Let India not be used as experimentation aground and in my view it is not good to make India to stop on the growth of broadband using wireless technology like WIMAX,” he said.

“The Government should be watchful against such intent of hoarding of spectrum for an immature and untested technology with no silicon, no devices support,” Mr Rao added

Wimax forum is backed by Intel. Basically it is the battle of Intel (Wimax standard) Vs Qualcomm (LTE).I want both LTE as well as Wimax networks to be launched so that there is competition in the market place. We desperately need a price war in the broadband market.

LTE Advanced is a true 4G technology, so is IEEE 802.16m WIMAX. Both of these are being proposed as 4G standards and have not received any approval from ITU-R. So the Wimax Forum has got it right about the LTE being offered by Qualcomm, even if for noble reasons.
