the only way out for them is to open the bookings to third party services similar to airline tickets. if air india and indian can do it, why not them? why run their own service at all? just outsource it all?let people buy rail tickets anytime of the day for any date in the future (2-3 months).
Website is very nice and interface is simple to use. Already reserved a ticket for testing purpose. Here is the screenshot of ticket. Service charges are less and even payment gateway charges too

Its only matter of time, till someone develops a software for agents to book via new portal too.
And then boom! Misuse wud start again.
I heard from few people that frequent retries to book ticket was blocking them. They were getting some warning messages.
I see an option for booking rail tickets on yatra.com. Is it any different?
Why should we still shell out 20 bucks extra by using yatra(it routes through irctc)?? Travel portals are robbers..
The URL of the new e-booking portal seems to be https://www.indianrailways.gov.in/indianrailway/common/PortalIndexPage.seam . Right now http://indianrailways.gov.in seems to be redirecting (via javascript!) to the above URL. I guess this redirection is temporary because http://indianrailways.gov.in is the official website of the Ministry of Railways and has a lot of important information like news, tenders, official timetable (Trains at a Glance), etc. Or maybe they'll give a link to the previous portal home page from the booking portal page.It seems the https part of the indianrailways.gov.in website is down; stuff on the http part like timetable ( http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/railwayboard/uploads/directorate/coaching/ ) still works.
