I thought this was based on a novel or a comic or something. But nope. Original story. Zack Snyder pitched a mature Star Wars movie to Disney right after they bought Lucasfilm but it was rejected. Since then, he has been developing it which has now become Rebel Moon.

Justice League director Zack Snyder has teased the Director's Cut of his upcoming sci-fi epic Rebel Moon will be very different to the standard release of the film, and comes in at a full hour longer.
