Of course Reliance will make an impact and change the rules of the game. In mobiles, it went for cdma technology, which was claimed to be technically superior to GSM, but now it has acquired gsm licence as well because cdma is expensive (royalty is to be paid) and ARPC (average revenue per customer) is about rs. 175, whereas arpc is about rs. 250 for gsm (and costs are lower). Since TRAI is now forcing broadcasters to be transparent as far as the individual channel and bouquet rates, dth operators will have little flexibility as far as the subscriptions are concerned. If prasar bharathi demands revenue from dishtv and sun for the free DD direct channels, the financial equations will again change. In the present scenerio, the present revenue per customer is about rs. 330; if users are allowed to pay per channel basis, what will the dth companies get from each customer. I believe it will be less and may not be viable.
