BSNL FTTH
Hi,

I have got a FTTH connection (Pondicherry branch) from BSNL FTTH for the past two years and have been using the GPON/XPON ONT/ONU Model + Router + WiFi combo device, which is Netlink HG323RGW (The OEM of this hardware is V-SOL (chinese)) provided by them. I've noticed that it performs very bad especially when multiple devices are connected from the start itself. I have procrastinated on this for a lot, but have decided to replace it.

I researched quiet a bit and this is my plans right now.

1. Netlink GPON combo hardware in bridged mode + TP-Link Archer AX10 for routing
2. Buy new ONU/ONT hardware + TP-Link Archer AX10 for routing

I have questions regarding both.

1. I have noted down the VLAN ID, PPPoE username and passwords. Do I need to note down anything else ? My connection comes with a Landline (uses VoIP). I guess if I have to go with a different ONT/ONU, I may probably need to choose one which has VoIP support.
2. I am kinda worried about replacing the NetLink hardware for a separate ONU/ONT hardware because I am still not sure if my connection is directly attached to the Netlink GPON's serial no, LOID etc at the BSNL OLT end. I may need some confirmation on this.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks a lot!

Depends on the area I suppose but Router Mac binding has been standard practice for a while now. The thing is you have to note the mac address shown for the Internet profile, not from the router stickers. If it's not shown there, you can simply look for it in the BSNL online portal at https://wsc.cdr.bsnl.co.in by logging in with your registered phone number with OTP and checking data usage.

Specially to note: take a config backup and test it by restoring the router in case something goes wrong.

How to put the router into bridge mode has been specified a couple of times on this forum, you can search for it. In any case since bridging works (even if the BSNL people don't like it) it's not much better to get a different device for making the bridge. If grabbing another combo unit make sure you can specify Serial Number + Mac address for PPPOE otherwise it will not work.

PPPOE connect takes time and you will get logs for "timed out waiting for auth server" but you can ignore them. If there is no connection for > 15 mins, then you have configured something wrong and should check PON status.

If you follow the instructions from the forum wrong, the router will get blocked by the OLT as "unauthorized" and you will not be able to connect until your LCO or the local BSNL SDE resets this for you.

You don't need to restore the backup config if there's a cable cut as long as you are satisfied when it comes back up and inform your LCO executive as such (but don't tell them you have bridged as they may not like it).

Hi @thatayush

Thanks for replying.
I have followed some steps in the forum and right now this is what I am seeing in the TP-Link Router logs while attempting. I actually set the ONT combo device WAN to bridge mode. I enabled VLAN in the ONT bridge mode WAN config itself.

And in the Router, I disabled VLAN and only entered my PPPoE creds there. I haven't changed the MAC in my router though.

I am using TP-Link XC220-G3V Voice and Data both working just talk to your LCO and tell them you want to use this router, if they agree you can order it from Amazon or buy it from local market. I can help you in configuring VOIP connection on this router

@tohsakarin revert back to the bsnl ONT and see if the internet is working, most likely it will not. You'll have to call the LCO and raise a complaint, this is a config error on the broadband server.

Basically there's a conflict with "port binding" aka mac address (of the tec certified router) binding being enabled for the OLT but not applicable for your connection, but it only starts showing up when you present a different mac address at the time of authenticating.

You've followed the steps right, except for the mac address. So once the issue is "fixed" from BSNL end you will have to ensure you're using the mac address from the previous internet profile on the ONT and bind one of the LAN ports to the bridge profile. Also ensure you have followed the steps 1:1 in the same order specified otherwise the ONT will directly inform the OLT to block this device due to duplicate mac addresses being present, and that will take you another round of raising issues that the LCO will (probably) not like (and definitely not liked by the local BSNL team )

Try these steps :

1) Note down the ONT serial number from your old HG323RGW , as your cable operator's OLT is already registered with serial number. There's a menu item shows this number , I don't remember the exact location , so please check.

2) Go to BSNL self care portal , go to usage details menu and note down the MAC address registered with ur PPPoE connection.

3) Now , you need to clone the ONT serial number received in step 1 to your new ONT

4) Clone WAN MAC to the MAC you received in step 2 to your new router.

Ideally these basic thumb rules will help in ONT , Router changing.

I am using Huawei ONT in bridge mode , OpenWrt in Raspberry pi and FTTH is working seamlessly.

Do not buy archer ax10 i have purchased 2 of them and Smart connect did not work properly you always be going to stuck on 2.4 gigahertz band ... Router did not switch you back to 5 gigahertz when you are near the router.... So my recommendation go for Archer AX23 Smart connect work like king..
