Apparently the affiliate link was tied to a random instagram influencers account, not even motorola. Don't think anyone at Motorola had any idea about it until the news broke.
they have app icons on their phones but apps are only installed through their own middle app that gets into action when the user first opens the icon. this is where the affiliate junk was being inserted. it seems unbelievable that a rogue employee added his own code in the launcher of moto devices. and this was not affecting just basic phones, it was reported originally on one of their most expensive devices.
either their whole stack was compromised and outside forces were able to insert code that was installed on all their androids. or one of their employees went rogue. this is just not something they can say that it was a bug that has been fixed now lol. which is what they are saying right now lol.
