Hello friends,Ever since my account was migrated to NIB II, I started to face the obvious issues with frequent disconnection and high latency - I complained it to the highest possible authorities and got it solved. Now, I don't face too much disconnections and the latency is also pretty okay. However, today evening all of a sudden I noticed my broadband running slow...I checked the SNR margin and found that it had dropped from 37 to 8 - even though the connection is stable but the speed is low.I checked the line to the modem with a telephone and couldn't find any noise/ disturbance whatsoever. So what could be the reason for this sudden drop in the SNR margin?Thoughts? Thanks!

Is your telephone working? With that low SNR you may find that it too is dead. The issue seems to be local, there must be a joint in cable between your modem and junction box, or perhaps monsoon waters have damaged the underground cable. You can try snipping and reconnecting the telephone cable at any visible joints.

If that does not help, the only solution is to register a complaint at local BSNL customer ceter, they will send a lineman who will fix the issue. If the line is damaged between the junction box and the exchange, they can also shift your number to another line transparently. I have had these issues a couple of times, you have to register complaint.

You can also register complaint online, although this stupid site only works with IE: http://mis.bsnl.co.in/pgs/internet/pgwebregn.asp

Thanks for your response sankalpit

My telephone is working perfectly and the strange thing is that even with such low SNRs, I am not facing any disconnection of my broadband. Just checked the SNR values now and it's 9.5 downstream and 16 upstream.

The values were fine until today afternoon when suddenly the connection was reset and since then the SNR has dropped significantly.

Registered a complaint already, now just wondering whether the line man would be able to understand what SNR and Attenuation are....everything apart from those are perfect

My current bandwidth [I am on UL 1350]

EDIT: Oh BTW, thanks a lot for that link to register a complaint. Bookmarking it now

Your plan allows for 2 mbps bandwidth. In which case your speed is fine, I get similar or lower on BB 500 plan which also allows for 2 mbps. Is your speed actually lower than before? These speedtests are not most reliable anyway, always fluctuating. If your speeds are acceptable, latencies are fine and you are not dropping connection anymore, do not worry about SNR and attenuation. In my case SNR and attenuation figures both increased, but there was no difference in speed. Likely something to do with configuration at BSNL exchange. If lineman comes do not talk about SNR and attenuation, tell him there is 'noise' in the line and to check the joints etc. He'll understand. But I dion't think you have any problems anymore, your speed looks fine. Most people do not get the full 2mbps, this has to do with distance from exchange and condition of telephone cables.

Ever since the bandwidth of UL 1350 has been upgraded I get speeds at pretty much that level, only a couple of times has it gone beyond the 2 mbps mark.

Connections are dropping but not as much as I expected with this drop in SNR

I also swapped cables between the modem and the phone line, but that didn't help. So looking forward to getting the call from the exchange and getting a lineman to get the line checked.

EDIT: Just now checked my speeds and this is what I got

And these are my current SNR/ Attn details [on G.dmt]

SNR Margin 11.5db 12.0db dB
Line Attenuation 14.5db 9.5db dB
Loss of Signal 0 0
CRC Errors 94 7734
Data Rate 2048 Kbps 512 Kbps kbps
Latency Interleaved Interleaved

Ok...the line man just now came and worked on the DP box and now my SNR and Attenuation are back to what they wereSNR Margin 43.5db 25.0db dBLine Attenuation 14.0db 6.0db dBThanks for your advice friends :)
