For almost 20 years with Cellphone, this is 1st time I lost a phone, Lost my Android Phone 2 days back.
I was tired and in a public place (Dushhera Mela) with kid in my lap, I was buying him some toy
when I stood, I don't remember if I had phone in my hand, or shirt pocket and while crossing the lane
I recalled something missing, Ran to the Shop, which was 3-4 meters accros, he denied, Took wife's phone dialed mine and it was :Switched OFF"
tried lot but couldn't find it or make that guy return it for a Hefty RANSOM.
Came back home, went to police station and gave a request if that's F.I.R. in hindi they usually take
"tehreer" which is something equivalent to F.I.R. but not exactly it.
Got the SIM Blocked and still struggling to get duplicate ones from Voda and RIM.
voda is out of stock, RIM is busy upgrading their system till 5th Oct.14 and won't issue before that.
Anyway Leave my issue, Lesson Learned
Lets Build up this Thread to let you double check do's and don'ts before you loose your Important data on your loved device.
1). Always Have PIN/PATTERN on main screen.
2). Always have a SIM Change Tracker enabled.
3). Use Encrypt data if available.
4). Before you do anything, Allow Admin Rights to "Android Device Manager"
once you do this, Go to Google Settings and Allow ADM to have access to Location.
also allow location access to whatever protection software you are using,
You specifically need to "Grant Access" since Google separated these options.
5). Have App like "Cerberus" "trend micro" or similar installed and spend sometime to Configure it.
Have the SIM Change ALERT SMS thing setup, Allow remote Admin thru sms and web panel, and if you have root access, there are methods to force it to be a system app which would even work after phone is "hard reset" using key combo or whatever.
6). Always do backup, atleast 2 -3 times a week, backup or sync data like pics, notes etc.
7). Don't keep bank info, or card details in any form.
Best way to keep banking password is using a password protected vault, and if you are too lazy,
do it like for SBI account don't use bank name, use something which helps you recall the bank name
and its username and password.
If you write "SBI" "manuwhatever" "iammanu123" any idiot would identify your details.
use "nisha" (the hot girl you often see in your bank), skip username and then password "InN3r@vV~4+O"
ALWAYS, I mean always, implement Lock on whatsapp, wechat, SMS, Phone settings, contacts
(except dialer) Cause Dial-er I always think can save in case of mishap, as someone might find you and try to seek help for you.
This way you are least chances of getting your Boss bombared with Objectionable Messages in case
someone opens your whatsapp and starts sending junk on recent lists.
8). share location on G+ with near friends, even if you do with one its fine, You never know when you can get help with such feature.
9). While I never do such pics, I am surprised how people do it, but have seen idiots keeping private bedroom/BF/GF pics and even sharing them on facebook, you are risking your and your spouse pics to next porn sharing site.
if the person who finds your phone, knows how risky its to use the device, he may just throw away the phone
but upload such pics from memory card for fun, which can ruin your private life.
so don't get carried away with how hot was your last kissing experience on cam, Cut the crap don't risk it.
10). I am kinda out of Idea for tonight, please continue with next bright Idea you have in your mind....
