The south Indian federation of cable TV operators association has urged the Information and Broadcasting ministry to grant them the status of small scale industries (SSI), even while condemning advertisements floated by some DTH operators, which they say is an attempt to malign cable television services.

Caught in the crossfire of a cable war, operators are nervously weighing their business options. The DMK governmentrun Arasu Cable Corporation, Royal Cable Vision (RCV), recently floated by M K Azhagiri, Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi's son, and Sumangali Cable Vision (SCV), owned by the Maran brothers are all in the fray for a big slice of the TRPs.

In one of the resolutions passed by the association at a meeting in Chennai, which has members across the four southern states, the operators said the Union government should take adequate steps to provide cable operators who have been in the business for nearly 18 years the status of a small scale industry.

They alleged that companies that had pay channels were providing them at a lower rate to the DTH operators, while charging the cable operators more for providing the same channels.

\"In order to bring this to the attention of the central government and to demand action to stop such unfair trade practices, nearly 25,000 cable operators will march towards Parliament House in New Delhi on September 24,\" P Shakilan, convener, said.

The association also demanded that branch offices of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Telecom Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) be set up in Chennai or Bangalore, as this would enable speedy resolution of disputes in the southern region.
