Hello,

I need to buy new AC for 190 sqft room top floor (sun directly hits the roof). So I know I need at least 2 Ton, but confusion is many people says that few brands 1.5 Ton AC's cooling is equivalent to 2 Ton in the other. So which brand I need and what tonnage?

A bit history on why I want new AC.
My first AC was 1.5 ton Voltas non inverter, It ran good the first year but cooling reduced from next year.
Many technicians have visited only to tell me that my AC is running perfectly. God knows what happened. But it won't chill the room as it used to do before and the compressor continues to run and room temp goes down but very slow. After so many diagnostics I came to a conclusion that because the unit was not vacuumed at install time, it's cooling efficiency was reduced but all technicians deny this fact. But I don't want to waste anymore time and money on this, I would rather buy new. My current AC already 5 years old now but this problem started happening since 2020, I bought it in 2019. In a nutshell I want to avoid this voltas brand all together.

Back to where we were, this post is about which brand's AC is must buy and what tonnage do I need 1.5 or 2 and it's cooling capacity, I want non inverter only.

Regards!

@Tejas01 Usually it's written on the pump itself where it's wattage, suction power and other parameters are mentioned. Yeah additional heat, I'll have to live with it now. If I have to, I will partition the room using permanent wall to make a 130sqft space. It should then be a properly sized room for this ac.

@vikram_ch Yeah, definitely go for that, I was told by many to buy 2 ton by nice community here, but at the same time many users from other places also told me to buy 1.5 ton o general which is in a class of it's own. This ended up confusing me. I went to buy with confused mind and it was set in stone when dealer himself told me o general 1.5 ton = 2 ton ordinary brand ac. So ended up buying this. I also wanted to avoid 2 ton to save on some electricity bill and I wasn't sure if the house wiring were good enough to carry 11-12 amps. This may sound like excuses but no point discussing this any further.

Buy ac according to room size only, for top floor, always get 0.5 ton extra than required for additional heat load.

I still don't know if the present issue of my current ac is due to rushed installation or it's the limitation of the machine itself.

Anyway this thread is going quite long, is it ok if I continue to update on this?

yeah keep updating the thread this is the longest thread I have seen in making and mainly all members contributed.

@alpha1980 my roof used to get too hot now I have tied green shade over my roof at a height of 12ft and and the temp has cooled down a bit

Seems promising but not sure how long will it last. There are many reviews that says it doesn't work or works but only for 10-15 days. Most positive reviews are just after the application, so obviously people will be thrilled to see such temperature difference for the first time. I need to know how long it lasts, does it requires coating every year?

Keeping the brand aside for now, isn't there a sun reflective paint from Berger or Nerolac. I recall seeing those ads which did mention lasting protection upto 10 years.

The claim can be subjective because we don't know under which conditions the tests were carried out. But if it does it's job for 7-8 years, I still think you are good.

Another option would be have the solar panels on the roof or some green cloth to shade it from direct sun attack.

That still leaves the other side of the room exposed and the only option I see is sun reflective paint.

One rain washes of the reflective paint coat lol
That is one of my main concerns. But other than rain, there's too much dust in my area, and unless I clear the roof every 3 days, the dust will accumulate and the paint won't be as reflective as before hence defeats the whole purpose.
