Friday - Oct 24, 2008
Sun Direct, the direct-to-home (DTH) service arm of Sun TV Network, launched its service in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Wednesday. NCR consists of Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Noida and Ghaziabad.
"Our Delhi launch is based on all the lessons we have learnt from our earlier launches. The starting package is priced at Rs 99 per month that includes a basic and a regional pack." said Tony D'Silva, chief operating officer, Sun Direct.
Apart from South India, Sun Direct beams into Gujarat, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, and has a customer base of over 1.5 million in 10 months of its launch. The basic package is offered at Rs 999 with a free set-top box and Rs 1,000 as installation charges.
Sun Direct, which has a strong presence in South India, focuses on the distribution to expand its base. "We have over 500 distributors in South India. In North Indian states, where Sun Direct is present, we have on an average two distributors for every district," D'Silva said.
States like Orissa, West Bengal and Maharashtra are also on Sun Direct's radar, the COO said. Though he added, that in an ideal situation Sun would look for an all India launch in a month. Sun Direct is also awaiting the government's approval to enter into the HDTV (high definition television) segment.
Commenting on the issue of technical interoperability of set-top boxes, D'Silva said it was not as simple as switching the smart cards between two different operators' set-top boxes. Interoperability will also mean that the software of the set-top box, middle ware will have to be changed, he added.
