New Delhi (PTI): DTH operator Tata Sky and south India-based broadcaster Sun TV have reached a settlement over sharing of channels after a 15-month long litigation before TDSAT, High Court and Supreme Court.During a proceeding before TDSAT on Thursday, both TataSky and Sun TV informed the broadcast tribunal that they have reached an agreement. This was the first case in which TDSAT has played the role of mediator.
Expressing happiness over the outcome of this settlement TDSAT Chairman Justice Arun Kumar said, "fortunately, the experiment to refer the matter to mediation with the consent of counsels for the parties has resulted in a fruitful culmination."
TataSky had in November 2006 filed a case against Sun TV's decision not to provide signals to the DTH operator on a contention that it was causing losses to the company. On December 7, 2007 TDSAT had appointed tribunal's former member Lt Gen D P Sehgal to mediate in the case. Sehgal, who successfully negotiated the matter in 10 days, has submitted his report to the legal body.
In the report, Sehgal had left it for Tatasky, a 80:20 joint venture between Tata group and broadcast major Star India, and Sun TV to sign a formal agreement for the period up to August 31, 2008.Counsels from both sides said they would sign an agreement within one week. Following this, the tribunal closed the case.
