Oh, so my property is not my property right now?!
It is your property so long as the govt does not want it in the 'public interest' for other devlopment works.
Let me give an example in my city. We have the ongoing metro, in certain areas the govt had to acquire land from others. Now because there is no longer any right to property you cannot outright refuse but you can certainly agitate & protest for a better deal. BUT they did not grab it for a pittance, they setup a commision to study the properties concerned and offered 85% of the market rate. The study was done in 2005 and money was offered in 2009. PPl were complaining the rate is no longer the same but they countered that the excess was just a bubble.
SO the property owners did get compensated at fairly good prices. Now the tennats they had were a different story altogerther, they agitated the most because they were losing their place of
business But right to proerty is to do with the owner and not the tenant anyway.
Now this is in the center of my city where ppl can agitate and affect the govt. what about in places where there is no one to create a stink, they govt can move in and get the land for a pittance. Presumably because the land is not worth that much to begin with. This does not address any attachment you might have to the land for whatever reason, if the govt wants it you can counter but you will not win and have to eventually settle
Another example is road widening where the govt says they want to broaden a road and you have to give up a portion of your land. Can delay it in court but not prevent it. In a recent case they said we will allow you to build an extra storey or give you some sort of credit that can be traded, but if everyone on the street gets these credits then their market value isn't going to be too much.
So its not like the govt can come in and grab ppl's land whenever they want, but neither can you completley prevent them from doing it.
