Listening to music while browsing the web while in the background your email is synced , most people who i know do that . Flash is for browsing , obviously not for email , there are just so many websites that use flash . Also no USB/SD Card slot .

Listening to music while browsing the web while in the background your email is synced.

The music player works while using the device. The default email app syncs in the background. Multi-tasking support is essentially not on for third party apps. They still have a feature where they can send updates to the user using a mechanism Apple provided in version 3 of iPhone OS. Most websites that rely on Flash are providing optimized editions for the iPhone and iPad. In fact most Google Android devices currently do not have Flash support coz Adobe has not yet released a player for them! I mean I do not have Flash support on my Nexus One. It is supposed to come. But not yet. Adobe can keep on crying about Apple's rejection but they have not even released the Flash player for Android devices which support them!

Again. Adobe Flash Player is not used by most websites as part of their core functionality. You can talk about online games like Farmville. Agreed. But they are not core to most website's default functionality.

As for USB and SD Card slots, Apple has accessories for them. Of course, it is an 'evil' move by the company but they do support them. Of course, it this becomes too big of a hassle they might add it in the next version. As they changed a couple of things in the newer releases of iPhone (MMS functionality for example!). :D

I am not saying iPad is a good device for guys like you and me. But if you talk about folks like our dads and moms... it is perhaps a great computing device for them.

go through this article... Robert Love: Why the iPad and iPhone don’t Support Multitasking

it is very well written from an android developer.

Ipad - Cutting edge - Do you belong there ? If I had an option I would buy it. Even if it ment saving for it.

From a common man's think point - I may not go for a device priced 30k, which do not have a CD/DVD drive, USB/SD card support (without dongles), even without a webcam and which will not play farmville in facebook, unless I am not spending my hard earned money :).

do you really think a common man worries about USB connectivity? CD DVD drive connectivity? think of it from your dad's point of view. your granddad's point of view.

I think "common" man will not buy ipad. because of if i want to watch movie or hear song there is no method other than itunes for that also we depend on pc or wifi.if they added a usb or dvdrom it would be nice. ipad+pc or wifi. i m still a common man.

yeah a common man has a broadband connection. he also is a member of a broadband forum on the web. and he discusses a tablet PC from Apple on that forum. and he needs his dose of music and movies which are downloaded from the web. right. i trust you. i can compare your requirements to my dad's requirement who is consider a common man when it comes to computing.

alright. let me clear another point here.

i am not a fan of apple ipad. not because of the hardware limitations but because of the software limitations. apple has locked the device way too much.

a better device would be loaded with an open platform (google android) comes to mind. software store would be open to any (Safe) application. you would have access to the storage space on the device. you would be able to install the apps of your choice. you would be be able to do most of the stuff that is possible on a regular machine.

the difference would largely be...

the operating system would not be as vulnerable as Windows (or even Linux).
application installs would be from an online store. rather than search for apps then downloading it and then installing it.
updates would be delivered automatically from a centralized location.
since the platform is relatively locked. it would be much safer than a regular computer (malware issues are almost negligible).

a linux based netbook is a comparable solution here. but it still does not compare to the convinience of a simpler platform like android.

funny enough... people are huge fans of apple products like iPad and iPhone... but they are not 'open' enough to embrace Linux just because it does not run their 'Windows'Apps.

Surprised to see that Sushubh has limited the rights of common man to have a broadband connection, being a member of BBF, discuss tablet PC from Apple, listen to music from web etc. You can do all these at an expense of Rs 49/month (BB from MTNL) which I think any common man can afford :D. iPad is still weighed against laptops in our community. A laptop without CD/DVD, USB and which will not run my MS applications is a big NO NO, even though it has futuristic touch interface. And in a normal Indian middleclass home, a PC is shared across members and not limited to dad or grand dad alone. Middle class do not have that luxury till now in India.
