Vikram Mehra, Chief Marketing Officer, Tata Sky Ltd. said, “The key hallmark of Tata Sky is to offer significant value to our subscribers with a host of unique value-added initiatives. We were the first to break the rupee 100 price barrier in packaging, first to introduce HD service at an unimaginable price point and now, the first to provide a world-class quality DTH service at an affordable price point. With our hardware priced at Rs 999, our world-class service will now be affordable for consumers across all strata of the society. We are confident that this pricing will catapult the process of digitization across the country and will help boost the government’s efforts to digitize India by 2010 for the Commonwealth Games.”

Most likely for 999, there might not be free months. One would have to opt and pay for packs(or individual channels-as a la carte is being made mandatory). Though its not official, but I guess so.

Yes ur right FREE viewing is stopped. However, installation is FREE so in Rs 999 includes hardware and installation costs.

NEW DELHI: Direct-to-Home operator Tata Sky on Thursday slashed the price of its set top boxes (STBs) to Rs 999, a move that will further fuel the competition in the DTH space.

“The aim is to make the STBs as affordable as possible and drive digitisation. Rural markets is a big opportunity and a major portion of our monthly additions are coming from the smaller towns,” Tata Sky Chief Marketing Officer Vikram Mehra told PTI.

The price of Rs 999, which includes hardware and installation cost, will help add significant numbers to the subscriber base, he added.

Tata Sky, a JV between the Tata Group and STAR, was earlier offering the basic STBs at Rs 1,599. It claims to have about 5.5 million subscribers.

Tata Sky is one of the seven operators in the country, offering DTH services. Other players are Dish TV, Sun Direct, Airtel digital TV, Reliance BIG TV, DD Direct and Videocon d2h.

According to analysts, India has about 18 million DTH subscribers. Though still in its infancy stages compared to 80 million cable TV households, the DTH industry is growing at a rapid pace. - PTI
