CHENNAI: Tata Sky, Direct-To-Home service provider, will launch a Personal Video Recorder and add regional channels and international programmes.
Addressing a press conference here, Vikram Kaushik, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, said the company had so far covered 537 towns in the south with 4,530 dealers. “We intend to have over 5,000 dealers by the end of this year to take on the growing competition, including from the latest entrant, Sun. ” Tata Sky was not concerned about the “pricing strategy,” he said.

yes.. all u have to do is purchase that PVR . it wont work with our STBs.

PVR is the STB with hard disk inside it, it has the software by which we can schedule the recordings, this recordings can be managed/viewed/deleted. If we have twin tuners, we can watch 1 channel & record another - see SKY+ on wikipedia

I don't know abt old STB's. For new conection Tata Sky should provide 2 options like with & without PVR enabled STB's. For people who want PVR STB's, they should take back old STB's and give some concession on new PVR-STB (only my guess...)

Then what will happened to the old STBs, PVRs are going to be costly,.

yes. it will be costly.. even dishtv provides Dish DVR but it is also costly so no one purchases it.. anyhow for a new subscriber they can afford it. but for us who already have old STB it is too costly.

Tata Sky hits back in DTH price war

In fact, both players are also betting on launching high-end set top boxes. Tata Sky has said that it will soon launch its personal video recorders (PVR) in the market. “While it’s difficult to put a figure to the PVR market size. I expect 10-20% of our subscribers would opt for them,” Mr Kaushik said. Dish TV has also launched its high-end set top box called Digital Video Recorder (DVR) that it hopes would catch on with its subscribers. Set top boxes that come with video recording applications help a consumer record his favourite programme.
