Tenda N301 Wi-Fi Speed Limited to 20–25 Mbps in WISP/Repeater Mode on a 100 Mbps RailWire Connection – Is This Normal?

Hi everyone,

I have a 100 Mbps RailWire fiber connection with the default Syrotech router provided by my ISP.

To extend the Wi-Fi range, I connected a Tenda N301 Wireless N300 (2.4 GHz single-band) router to the Syrotech router and tested it in both WISP mode and Universal Repeater mode.

The issue is that when I connect devices to the Tenda router's Wi-Fi, the speed never goes beyond about 20–25 Mbps, even though my internet plan is 100 Mbps.

I'm trying to understand whether this is expected behavior or if something is configured incorrectly.

  • Is the Tenda N301 hardware itself limited to around 20–25 Mbps over 2.4ghz Wi-Fi in real-world usage?

I'm wondering whether this is simply a limitation of the Tenda N301 and repeater mode / wisp mode, or if there are settings (channel width, wireless mode, placement, etc.) that I should check.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
 
are you connecting the router with lan cable? this appears to be a very low end device but it should be able to reach speeds of 50-60mbps in close range.
 
yeah that would slow down the speeds by a lot so makes sense you are getting 20-25mbps. router has to fetch the signal and rebroadcast it on low end hardware. single band router as well.
 
okay so does that every 2.4ghz router would be able to provide me such crappy speeds ... ??

what do you suggest any better router ?
 
find a way to get a lan cable to the second router. that would fix your problem with this router alone... wired is the key point here. for wireless extension, you probably would have to buy more expensive multi-band hardware which supports mesh routing. lan cable would be much cheaper and reliable option in the long run.
 
but lan cable connection would be very difficult for me as i have multi story house the main router is in first floor and iam in ground floor hence lan connections would not be possible and i would need a new mesh router , please suggest any good model
 
someone else might be able to suggest mesh routers that can work through multiple floors.

i am in a similar situation but since this is a corner house on the road, i just drag the cables through the outside on the side. right now i have cable running from basement to ground floor in two different rooms. and soon i would be extending the same network to second floor of the same house. all wired. just taking cable outside the window and running it outdoors to other windows. and it has been fine.

Ubiquiti is the best in class if you can afford it. Slightly complex to setup as well. Between floors is going to be hard for anything and speed is likely going to drop without wired backbone. This is again a suggestion... consider placing the router closer to stairs and see if it is possible to get a lan cable between the floors in stair area.

i hope u understood my requirement as i dont need to connect lan cable , i just want to extend wifi range ??
